She joined the Air Force in 2007 at the age of 17, and deployed twice to the Middle East, first to Qatar and then to Kandahar, Afghanistan. As she describes in her oral history interview, though she adjusted quickly to the military, her eventual transition to civilian life was not as easy. Her lifelong passion for music--she is an accomplished fiddler--gave her a sense of direction and helped bridge the gap between the two worlds.Jamie Fox at time of interview [2019]Veterans and the ArtsLegacies of Service: Celebrating Native VeteransFox at the Hays pow wow, Hays, Montana.1994Hays pow wow in the Rockies, Hays, Montana1994View of the prairie, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.n.d.Cemetery where Fox's grandfather Henry Fox and grandmother Ruth Powerderface Fox are buried, Hays, Montana.1994Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Ceremony to celebrate the end of Fox's and Shawn TwoCrow's service, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.2016Fox and Uncle Cranston, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.n.d.Fox and Uncle Cranston, Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.n.d.Fox at the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.n.d.Portraits of Fox and grandfathers on parents' mantel.n.d.Portrait of Grandfather Henry Fox and shadow box.n.d.Portrait of maternal Grandfather David.n.d.Celebration at Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.07/04/1905Growing up on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana; idyllic childhood; seeing military personnel from nearby Air Force bases; military tradition in Native American community.Father encouraged early interest in flying; choosing aviation as a career; going into the military before college in order to pay for her education.Community support for military members; ceremony that is performed when military members return from deployments.Details of her first deployment to Qatar; bonds that developed with those on base; communicating with her family back home; community support for her mother.Stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Washington; offered deployment to Afghanistan; served there from November 2011 to November 2012; living conditions.Working the flight line; maintaining C-17 planes; routine of work, sleep, eating, and going to the gym; always on edge; constant stress.Recalling the day she returned from Iraq; surreal feeling to be back in the US.Role of music in her life; using music as a coping mechanism during transition from military to civilian life; being a veteran will always be a part of her life.Veterans History Project, American Folklife Center, Library of Congresshttps://memory.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/story/loc.natlib.afc2001001.114479/DLC-AFC2022-03-01loc.natlib.afc2001001.114479
