DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALTITUDE. The following tables show the distribution of the aggregate, foreign born, and negro population with respect to altitude above sea level. Of the aggregate population nearly two-fifths live between 500 and 1,000 feet above the sea. This proportion is slowh' dimin- ishing, the increase going in the main to higher alti- tudes. Three-fourths of the inhabitants live below 1,000 feet, and more than nine-tenths below 1,500 feet. The distribution of the foreign born shows little diver- gence from that of the aggregate population, except in case of the lowest altitude represented — that is, below 100 feet. Here is found one-fourth of the foreign born, while nearl}- one-sixth of the aggregate popula- tion is found in this region. The excess in the foreign born is in the eastern coast states. The distribution of negroes in accordance with alti- tude is, on the other hand, quite difl'erent. The pro- portion of the negroes in the low coast belt consider- ably exceeds that of the aggregate population, but is less than that of the foreign born, while in the area between 100 and 500 feet is found very nearly one-half the negroes, as contrasted with little more than one-fifth of the aggregate population and less than one-sixth of the foreign born. At great altitudes are found practically no negroes, hence the habitat of negroes with regard to altitude maj^ be characterized broadly as being near sea level. DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH PHYSIOGRAPHIC REGIONS. For the purpose of classifying the population, the countiT has been divided into 18 districts or regions, diti'ering from one another in surface, climate, drainage, and altitude. These regions are described in full in Bulletin No. 149, of the Twelfth Census, entitled "A Discussion of Area and Population,'" and their limits are represented on the accompanjnng outline map. The following tables show in each of the divisions above mentioned, the number of inhabitants, clas.sLtied as aggre- gate, foreign born, and negro, at each of the last three censuses, namely, 1900, 1890, and 1880. They also show the numerical increase from census to census, the per cent of increase, the proportion of the population in each of the areas in question, and the density of popula- tion of each region at each of the three decades. 3 Docs not include the population of Alaska. * Does not include the population of Alaska or Indian Territory. ^ Less than one-tenth of 1 per cent. Less than 0.1. Considering the aggregate population, the mo-st denselj' settled of these areas is that of New England; next to that, the Appalachian Valley and the Piedmont Region; while the most spar.sely settled regions are those of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain country, the Plateau Region, and the Great Basin, where the rainfall is scanty and where agriculture depends upon irrigation. The largest proportion of the aggregate population, one-sixth, is found in the Prairie Region, the granary of the country. Next to that is the New England area, containing about one-,seventh, in which manufactures is the principal industiy. The Lake Region follows, with one-eighth of the population, and here manufac- tures and the cultivation of grain are the chief indus- tries. The table showing the distribution of the foreign born in accordance with physiographic regions shows 12 marked diflferences from that of aggregate population. The proportion of the foreign born found in New England i.s far higher than in any other region; the next in order is the Lake Region where is found nearlj' one-fourth of the whole foreign born element. The third in number of foreign born is the Prairie Region. In these areas are found more than two-thirds of ail of the foreign born of the country. The distribution of the negroes shows a wide diver- gence from that of the aggregate population and an almost complete reversal of the distribution of the foreign boi'n, more than two-tifths being found in the Coastal Plain, and one-tifth in the Piedmont Region. More than six out of ten of the negroes are found, therefore, in the lands east of the Appalachians and those bordering upon the Gulf coast. The distribution of the native born population is practically the same as that of the aggregate population. The distribution of the foreign born shows features quite similar to that of the aggregate population, the greatest proportion being found in the same latitude — that is, between the fortieth and forty-first parallels — but north of this latitude the proportion is greater, and south of it, less. Taken as a whole, the foreign born tend toward higher latitudes than the aggregate popu- lation. The distribution of the negroes is quite different, the maximum number being found between the thirty- second and thirty-third parallels of latitude, where is found nearlv one-sixth of their total number: while 14 between the thirty-second and thirty-fifth parallels are found over two-fifths. Between the fortieth and forty- first parallels of latitude, where is found the maximum number of the aggregate population, the native born, and the foreign born, there are but 2.7 per cent of the negroes. This illustrates the fact that the negroes as a class occupy much lower latitudes than the aggregate population or the foreign born. DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH LONGITUDE. * Less than 0.1. The distribution of the aggregate, native born, for- eign born, and negro popidistion in accordance with longitude is pre.sented in the following table.^. The grcate.8t proportion of the aggregate population and of the foreign born population lic.twoen any two merid- ians is found between the seventy-third and seventj'- fourth meridians, comprising the larger portion of New York city; the greatest proportion of the na- tive born is found between tiie eighty-seventh and eighty -eighth meridians, which include the city of Chi- cago; and the greatest proportion of the negroes is found between the ninetieth and ninety-tirst meridians, including the cities of St. Louis, Memphis, Vicksburg, and New Orleans. The ninety-sixth meridian divides the country geo- graphically into two nearly equal parts, but the popu- lation cast of this line, f)6, 499,0(10, is seven times as great as that west of the line, 9,498,000. DISTRIBUTION OF THE AGGREGATE POPULATION BT SQUARE DEGREES. Table 21 shows to the nearest thousand the distribu- tion of the aggregate population of the United States in 1900 (exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii), b}^ square degrees, that- is, the population included between two consecutive parallels and two meridians, and is prac- tically a map, from which an approximation of the density of population can easily be made. The sparseness of population of the arid region is clearly indicated, and the great centers of population, like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and other large cities, can readily be located. 20 Table 21.— AGGREGATE POPULATION, TO THE NEAREST en a w . s- z -< o S2 DEGREES OF LONGITUDE. The distribution of population and its elements in accordance with mean annual temperature is repre- sented in the following tables. Of the aggregate pop- ulation, three-fifths are found to be living under tem- peratures ranging from 45° to 55°, the proportion within these temperatures having slightly diminished within the past ten years. Between 45° and 65° are found more than four-fifths of the population. The proportion of population has increased in the extreme temperatures; that is, below 40° and above 70°. The foreign born are found to be living under colder average conditions than the aggregate population, and the negroes under much warmer conditions. Of the former more than three-fourths are found between 45° and 55°, and more than seven-eighths between 40° and 55°, more than one-half being found between 45° and 50°. The drift of the foreign born is toward lower temperature, as is shown by the general increase in proportion in those regions. The negroes are found in greatest proportion in those regions where the annual temperature is between 60° and 65°, while between 55° and 70° are found nearly 84 per cent of all the negroes. The drift of the negroes is plainly away from the lower temperatures and toward the higher. The following tables show the distribution of the aggregate, foreign born, and negro population, in accordance with mean annual rainfall. Of the aggre- gate population, nearlj' two-tifths are found in the region where the rainfall averages from 40 to 50 inches, and nearlj' one-third where it averages 30 to 40 inches. Not less than three-fourths of all the population are found within regions of suiEcient rainfall. Where the rainfall is less than 20 inches, which marks the line of lowest limit of successful agriculture without irriga- tion, there are found but 3.4 per cent of the aggregate population. The foreign born are distributed in much the same manner, except that the proportion is greater in the regions of average and scanty rainfall, and less in those of abundant rainfall. The negroes, on the other hand, are found in their greatest numbers where the rainfall is between 50 and 60 inches. Here are found more than three-fifths of the total number. In those regions in which the rainfall ranges from 40 to 60 inches are found more than nine-tenths of all the negroes of the country, showing that the negroes afl'ect regions of heavy rainfall.
