The Mean temperature of any place, for the year, is a matter of great importance. The mean temperature at the resorts along the South Jersey Coast is found to be 54 degrees. This is almost the point marked temperate on the thermometric scale, in fact, the isothermal line or line of equal heat indicating a temperature of 55 degrees which yearly average is to be found at very iew points on the face of the Globe, wherever the mean is found, just at the temperate point, there we have one of the most important desi- derata in the health and happiness and comfortable existence throughout the jear, makes the County of Cape May one of the most enjoyable spots on the face of the Globe in which to reside which is proven by its rapid growth. No resort on the coast is so admirably situated as Wildwood from the standpoint of ideal year-round climate and other natural advantages such as bathing, boating, fishing and crabbing. Instead of the wide stretch of heated sand behind it, the broad Delaware Ba}'-, a great inland sea, at this point thirty miles wide, insures cool breezes no matter what the direction of the wind. This is why it is always cool in Wildwood in summer and delightfully mild and balmy in winter. The island known as Five Mile Beach embraces three municipalities. The city of Wildwood which was formed in 191 1 by the consolidation of Holly Beach with Wildwood in the centre, the borough of Wildwood Crest on the southerly end of the island, and North Wildwood, formerly Anglesea, on the northerly end. From the point on the northerly end boats run every half hour to Stone Harbor ; on the southerly end boats run every half hour to Cape May which is the extreme end or point of land between the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean which makes this the coolest spot in the summer being less than six miles from Ocean to Bay. The deep Inland Water Way gives to Five Mile Beach, with the three canals running into the very centre of the business part of the island, cheap trans- portation. The fishing for pleasure is known 'to every angler of the East as the very best. As an industry, thousands of barrels of fish are shipped to all parts of the country annually- Fish of every variety of the deep sea-beach bass or drum fish weighing 50 to 7S lbs. are caught, and at the compiling of this book thousands of visitors are viewing the horse mackerel weighing 1080 lbs., caught in the ocean 5 miles from this resort. Mackerel-cod, porgies, weak-fish, blue-fish, flounders, sea bass and king fish being the principal fish shipped. RAPID GROWTH OF SOUTH JERSEY COAST RESORTS Increase of Seaside Resorts as Recorded in Their Annual Taxable Valuables FIVE MILE BEACH HAS BIG GAIN The subjoined tables show the assessable values and growth of the seashore resorts of Cape May- County, according to the yearly return of the tax assessor. It is interesting to note, that in : 1891, when Atlantic City's total values reached $10,865,- 634, it may be said to have reached the same period of growth and occupied approximately the same area as the resorts on Five Mile Beach do in 1913. The actual increase in twelve years of Five Mile Beach is $10,609,444, making an average of over $2,422 a day, or just about a new house daily for that period. The history of Atlantic City's growth, as well as that of the leading resorts of Cape May County, as recorded in their increase of taxable values, is given below: Combined resorts of Five Mile Beach, including Anglesea, Wildwood, Holly Beach and Wildwood Crest: Five Mile Beach has increased over $2,422 a day for twelve years.
