Second-Class Mail Matter Monograph of »• 21 »9»9 •'■'V,:'57 SERVICE FLAG DAY, MARCH 29, 1918 University of South Carolina March 29, a beautiful spring day, the Service Flag of the University of South Carolina was unfurled in the chapel with simple and impressive ceremonies. The battalion of cadets, forming the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, marched from the Gymnasium on Sumter street to the library where the color bearer, Mr. C. W. McLaurin of McColl, received the Service Flag from the hands of the President's wife, Mrs. W. S. Currell. To the strains of martial music the battalion followed by Trustees, Alumni, Professors and Students marched to the chapel. After the invocation by Rev. C. E. Burts, D. D, ©f the First Baptist Church, Columbia, Governor Richard I. Manning received the flag from the color bearer with the following appropriate remarks: As President of the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina I accept this flag. I accept it with all it represents and stands for in our life. It is the emblem of our unity, our power, our aims and purposes as a Na- tion. We will preserve it and hand it down to our child- ren and our children's children, and they as well as we will stand under it and by it with loyalty and high resolve. It may be an accident or a coincidence that Good Friday was selected as an appropriate day for this ceremony. That matters not, but it is appropriate that it should be held on this day. Good Friday commemorates the Supreme Sac- rifice of Him who gave himself to save the world. On this day we receive this flag to commemorate and honor the names and examples of those five hundred and thirty- one Alumni and students of this University who have of- fered their all— themselves, on the altar of their country, to defend its honor, and to save to the world freedom, lib- erty, justice and righteousness. We will cherish this flag, with its stars representing these five hundred and thirty-one young heroes, who are ready to make any sacrifice, even that of their lives. What does their example mean to us? What does it mean to the students who have not followed the lead of these noble four hundred and thirty-one, and what does it mean to us who cannot go to the front? Will we be inspired as they have been to make any sacrifice that we are called upon to make, even to life itself? God grant to them and us not to make this sacrifice in vain, but that through it at last victorious peace may come to the whole world. Mr. F. H. McMaster (class of 1888) city editor of The State, was then introduced and delivered the following impressive address: Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: Students of the University: Lightly we may say that we are here today to unfurl this service flag, and do honor to those represented by the stars upon its field. Did our purpose end there, our time would be wasted, and our presence here would be a mock- ery. Indeed, we stand in reflected glory. Those whom these stars represent have honored themselves and us far beyond our power to increase or lessen. '"Tis not what a man does which exalts him, but what a man would do." "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." This they have offered to do — to lay down their lives for you, for me, for humanity. 'That the world under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth. " And paraphrasing again the language of a great Ameri- can, we fall far short of the hour and our duty, if we do not here today dedicate ourselves unreservedly and wholly to the cause which they represent, and here highly resolve to lay our all, upon the altar of our country, which, with our allies, now stands for the liberty of the human race. A few days ago I met a man who had been touring the South in a public capacity, who said to nie with enthusi- asm; "The glorious thing about it is the loyalty of the South. It is entirely loyal." I was somewhat shocked, and replied; "Of course the South is loyal. Why should it not be loyal." He replied; "Of course the South should be loyal, but I have not found the same unrestrained unanimity every- where else." Then I understood what he meant, and I told him that we too had some disloyal recreants, but that they did not dare to speak above a whisper. Yes, my friends, it is the truth, there are among us to- day some depraved souls. No other word expresses it. Depraved souls, for whether they be moved by pacificism, or personal antagonism to our great president, or ances- tral incHnations, they are depraved just the same, and entitled to the treatment of a burglar who is found in a home, and who has no consciousness of wrong doing. All may not be vicious, all may not be inspired wholly by base selfish motives with no thought for the public good, with no capacity for accomplishing anything good, and with only power to delude hearers into giving them support for their wholly selfish schemes, but they are all depraved in that they lack the noble quality of loyalty to their country and are willing to stab her in the back. Certainly they are not entitled to as kindly treatment as the Tories received in the American Revolution, and shooting and hanging was considered none too good for them. Yes, for the pacificists, the jail, or the home for the feeble minded, and for the Huns at heart and for the trai- tors among us, the noose or the firing squad. There may be some wholly loyal Americans, who are entirely sympathetic with the war as individuals, and who justify our entrance into it because of the unusual provo- cation, but who may still have some mental reservation that our country has departed from a fundamental and time honored principle of avoiding "entangling alliances." For them I have a word. I join with Light Horse Harry Lee in the tribute; "When even our young and far spreading empire shall have per- ished still will our Washington's glory unfaded shine, and die not until love of virtue cease on earth, or earth itself sink in chaos." It is worth our while to read the farewell address of George Washington the founder and guide of our republic, who was raised up by God, as it would seem, to begin a new epoch in the world's history, and learn what he really did say. He never even paraphrased "entangling allian- ces" in the manner in which it is frequently used. After admonishing most careful fulfillment of all engagements already made with foreign nations, "for honesty," says he "is the best policy with nations as with individuals," as the Germans will yet learn, he advises against 'entering into other engagements which might make any foreign nation a favored nation, and he gives as the reason for his admonition; "With me, a predominant motive has been to gain time to our country to settle and mature its yet recent institutions as to progress without interruption to that degree of strength and consistency which is neces- sary to give it humanly speaking the command of its own fortunes." "If we remain one people, under an efficient govern- ment the period is not far off when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such attikide as will cause the neutrality we may at any time resolve upon to be scrupulously respected; when bellige- rent nations under the impossibility of making acquisi- tions upon us will not lightly hazard the giving us provo- cation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel." One hundred and twenty two years have passed since those words were uttered. Our country has had time to settle and mature its institutions fully and completely. We have become a nation in fact as in name, firmly knit with one ideal and one flag, the emblem of our liberty. A great and mighty nation, operating under the greatest discov- ery in political science, a representative government, com- posed of several sovereignties with complete powers of local administration and for doing private justice, but with such powers granted to the federal government as are necessary for the general good. Navigation of land and sea, and air and below the surface of the sea, cable and wireless, telephone and telegraph, and ability to grind corn with water that has passed over the dam, have de- stroyed the isolation America enjoyed in Washington's day. A nation bursting with pride, blindly arrogant and consumed with lust of world power, has flaunted our scru- pulously observed neutrality in accordance with law of na- tions, has murdered not only our unarmed men but our women and children, has unhesitatingly and brazenly given us every provocation that could be given us either as a nation or as civilized men. Could we stand aside with our flag flaunted and spat upon, and not only our civiliza- tion and our liberties but the civilization and liberties of the world threatened? Washington came forth from his coveted and peaceful private retreat to take up arms again for his country two years after delivering his inspired ad- vice when only a shadow of the wrongs done us by the Germans were threatened by the French in 1798. 8 If not only what was won in 1776 is to be lost but the world turned back to the days of Charles I; of Louis XIV., or of Philip of Spain, then we must fight until not a man or a dollar remains. As the sturdy patriot Samuel Adams said in 1776: "Courage then, my countrymen!, our contest is not only whether we ourselves shall be free but whether there shall be left to mankind an asylum on earth for civil and reli- gious liberty. Dismiss therefore the justice of our cause as incontestible. The only question is what is best for us to pursue in our present circumstances." As France fought with us for our liberty in 1776, so we must fight with her for her liberty and our own, today on her soil. And while in body all of us may not stand with General Pershing before the grave of Lafayette, in spirit, unreservedly and wholeheartedly, we may shout with him: "Lafayette, Lafayette, we are here, we are here!" Wave on, flag! And may your constellation grow until history repeat itself and there may be writ again across the scroll of our alma mater another legend verbatim with the first in part: "All the students who were physically able did service in the armies of the Confederacy" of England, France, Italy and America. Wave on, 0, flag! unsullied and unfurled; "Till the war drum throbs no longer, and the battle flags are furled In the Parliament of man, the Federation of the world. There the common sense of most shall hold a fretful realm in awe. And the kindly earth shall slumber, lapt in universal law." Comstock's Band of Columbia played a number of de- lightful pieces during the exercises. America and The Star Spangled Banner were enthusiastically rendered by the large assembled audience. The following is a partial list to June 1, 1918 of students and alumni in the service. The total to June 1 was 531 but many more have been added since. The Dean or the President would be glad to make any additions or correc- tions to which their attention is called. A new Service Flag bulletin will be issued at the close of the world war.
