.r^'- (lass sL_S^6A li".)k]B-S^^^ PRESKNTKl) l!Y WHO'S Who IN BERKELEY 1917 COMPILED BY GEORGE SUTCLIFFE Price $2.00 , B5 S n Preface Bh.RKEI/EY, the seat of the rniversity of California, is immediately north of Oakland, 'liie city derives its name from George Berkeley, Bishop ol C'loyne, Ireland, who came to America early in the eiphl- eenth eentnry for the pnrpose of establisliing colleges. His devotion to the cause of learning made appropriate the bestowal of iiis name on the educational capital of the west, for it was he that penned the pro])hetic line, "W'cstward tlie cciiirse of Empire takes its way." The University of California is the second largest in the world, having 6,300 regular students and a teaching staflf of 500 professors and instructors. There is also an enrollment of several thousand at the Summer School each year. Holding a site which slopes gradually toward the hills in such a way as to present a commanding view of the Golden Gate, the liay and San Francisco, this ranks as one of the most picturescpiely located American universities. The campus is a ])leasant place of green lawns, old oak groves, forests of eucalyptus trees and botanical gardens — all a setting for an im- posing array of buildings. The newer structiu'cs are of dazzling white granite, with red tile roof, forming part of a harmonious arcliitectural jdan which is being carried out as the institution develops. In the center of the camjjus near the Sather Gate are California Hall, Benjamin Ide Wheeler Hall, the great L'niversity Library and the Boalt Hall of Law. Just to the east of this noble group rises the Sather Canii)anile, 302 feet high. A wonderful panoramic view is gained from its top, reached by elevator. Among the other notable structures are the Hearst Mining Building, Mechanics Building, Agriculture Hall, the new Hilgard Hall of the College of Agriculture, Hearst Hall and the Chemistry buildings. The most distinctive feature of the L'niversity is the (ireek Theatre, situated in a hollow of the hills at the eastern extrennty of the caminis. Planned on similar lines to those of the ancient theatre at EiHdaudrns, it easily scats 9,000 people. Berkeley's climate is so equable that it is pos- sible to hold out-door performances at any season of the year. It is the aspiration of every artist who visits the Pacific Coast to appear in the Greek Theatre, and Sarah Bernhardt, Margaret Anglin, Maud Adams, Nordica, Tetrazzini, Gadski, Schumann-Hcink and Josef Hoffman arc among those who have found inspiration here under the serene sky of California. During the summer months and while the University is in session Half-Hours of Music are given in the Greek Theatre on Sunday afternoons — concerts free to the ])ublic. Berkeley, with a population of 65,000, is prominent among the pleasant pjaces of residence which have made city life in California so attractive. This is essentialh' a community of artistic homes, and its streets and Ijoule- vards will delight the visitor. Claremont, Northbrae, Cragmont, Thousand Oaks, Arlington and Kensington Park are charming residential districts beautified with greenery. Above the city rise the Berkeley Hills, with many vantage points to allure leisurely pedestrians. Charter Hill, bearing near its crest the "Big C" of the collegians, is scaled by a winding trail, and l)cyond l)y an easy route one may walk to Grizzly Peak, highest point in tiiis range, 1759 feet. In the Cragmont district arc two pavilions upon the Iiillsidc which offer extended views out over the city and the bay. To the nortli may be seen steep Cerrito Hill. The Hotel Shattuck, in the center of Berkeley, is a tourist hotel moder- ate in charges and excellent in its appointments and service. It is built in the characteristic Spanish architecture and faces the broadest thorough- fare in California, Shattuck Avenue. ^ 'o ABBOTT, Raymond Barrington, tcaclior.
