SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 1867. The great event of this day is, that I have got possession of the movement of my fathers gold watch. Through the kindness of Mr. Rice of the old jewelry establishment of Goddard & Rice of Worcester. At my fathers death, his little effects were left undivided - his watch on old English lever had belonged to General Davis & imported for him in his palmy days, and sold after his death = father purchasing it out of respect & old time friendship. and wore it during the last +27 years of his life - or more. at my fathers death I hastened to the field leasing the family relics at Davids - When on Morrie Island 1865 - I was shocked by the information (incidental) that David + Julia had sold the old watch! to Fisk & Goddard (Jewelers) and taken in return a fashionable new one for Julia. I immediately wrote to Fisk & Goddard asking to purchase it back at any price if not melted. They replied that my request came too late, the cases had been melted for old gold two weeks before my letter arr, - they had the seal & would save it for me. On my return in 1864. Mr Fisk gave it to me with much feeling. In 1866 when I overSunday, August 4, 1867 Went to lecture in Worcester. Mr. Rice of the old firm, and who had taken care of the old watch for 30 years, sent for me to come to him and presented me a little diamond ring, from the single diamond in the old watch. Thus I had two parts of the keepsake. he then informed me that he had sold the movement to a man in Michigan - and would try to get it for me if I desired. I begged him to do so - and now 8 months later he sends again, and in the midst of a fearful rain I have hastened to his shop and received the identical work - dial hands and all - that I had loved and honored from my childhood. My fathers daily companion for 30 years and his old eyes never grew so dim that they could not read it peach bright honest face. I am to have it made into a little time piece for my table or desk - and read it when my eyes too grow dim. I paid Mr. Rice $6.00, what I have cost him and all I could get him to take. How could David & Julius have done such a thing? Monday, August 5, 1867 Yesterday went to church to hear Mr. Haskell candidate for Universalist church.
