My picture was finished, and hung in the parlor, rather well, but hurried in the execution I think. Among the calls Mr De Freeze Rice of Maine - E.B. French 3rd Auditor of Treasury. Genl Muzzy Dr Murphy. Geo Maren - Mr De Freeze appointed the next Thursday evening to call on the President - I have sent a great many cards Wednesday, January 2, 1878. Still fine. I wrote 30 letters to send with cards, and received several and commenced to copy a set of Resolutions for the President but was too tired to continue and retired almost clene out - I am working hard, and it seems so cheerless downstairs Thursday, January 3, 1878 Colder. - The day had come at last for which I came. I was to see the President this evening. I had my Resolutions to finish. Could not keep my room warm, went below & took cold. Mrs. Shepard went to Library to copy. I had call after call to hinder. - and at last had to dress alone in a cold room. Mrs. Shepard went downtown with "John" to pay a visit. But I went & delivered my papers in the President's parlor. Mr. Defreese brot me safely home, at 8 1/2 and I went to bed alone, still in a cold room which I could not get a fire to burn in and not one else thought to help me. Friday January 4, 1878 In the night I woke with the snow sifting in on to my bed & head. could scarcely move or breath. had a dreadful cold been taking it for 16 hours, and was down at last. My bed was removed to a safe corner. and a fire made up. I get a little [porier?] to breathe in the PM and try to write a letter to the President. Mr. Defreeze has pro?fered to go with me to the Secty of State.- I am ill. but my letter has been presented. Saturday, January 5, 1878. Sunday, January 6, 1878 Monday, January 7, 1878 Monday, February 11, 1878. Took a lesson in china painting with Mrs. Taylor, and made neck ties. Tuesday, February 12, 1878. Went down town with Mrs. Taylor to purchase a yd torsion lace for scarf = dress for Mary M., 4 1/2 - [Drop?] [dite] 2 yds. @ 1 $ fringe 3 1/2 yds @ .3 Called at Mrs. Hitz Rooms & on Daisy decided to have Mr Ramseys read his paper on Thursday eveng at Mrs Taylors, and to invite Mr L Due - Mrs. Hitz rooms were busy and interesting some 20 women making paper seed bags very skillfuly Sent invitation to Mr. Le Due and went to see Mr. Ramsey to tell him of the meeting, & ask him to copy the Resolutions for me in his office. ~ Called on Genl. Townsend to ask about Mrs. Melchers pension. He thought it might be slow, from the late death of M Melcher - call from Nellie Boynton to invite me to see her, and call at evening from Sheparden & Mrs. Brooks - the Butter artist, who had a cast in Butter to show us, she wants to go to Paris, and has no money to go with will see M. Le Due - I am too tired to speak this evening Remain in today to rest - make neck ties - scarf tie - At evening our company came. Mr. Ramsey. Mrs. [?] Mrs Hitz, Miss Matthews. - M [?] Whiting. Mr. . - The paper was well received, and the remarks which followed were sound. It was proposed to regard it as a branch of Social Science, and thought possible to establish a series of meetings of like character, & taken, such name The evening was not fine, and a thin snow had been falling all day Mr. Ramsey was not well and read with great difficulty - he brot me the copy of Resolutions - which I design for the Secty of State, Light snow, but cleared. I wrote Ramsey. Posted letter to Fannie & Wally. Mrs Taylor fitted dress for Annie. neither of us well I washed and did up laces, but could not do much. Wrote Mr Pratt a long letter, aduring him to give up his high rent if he can, and get his family [?] their relatives. commence letter to Mr. [Dwight]. Little May Melcher came to say her mother would come on Monday to sew for me. give her 10 cents to get her supper. She was wise as ever, and seemed to want to stay. The month half gone, and I must hasten my matters to go home in three weeks. how I need more strength to work with Warm dull morning. cleared at noon. at ten a call from Giles Stebbins. comes on B[ntest] Treaty matters. I arrange to meet him at Capitol Monday noon Mrs. Taylor goes to ask Mrs. [Sliny?] (Hatty Heald) to call. she came I asked her about a room for Mrs. Melcher. she could get none for her. gave dreadful accts of intemperance & theft - I went with Mrs Taylor to see Mrs French,, who did not credit it. - Mrs. S[liny?] had persecuted Mrs Melcher for a year or more. We took address and looked for rooms on the? st. - woman not home. Home to dinner at 5 - laid down & slept till 8 - bright night - Letters from Miss Austen and Abram. Fine went to Mrs Melchers & hired her to work for me next week for 2$. Paid her .25, = told her to wash for her self tomorrow, & iron, & look up a room to move into & I would pay all over 3 Dolls. her present rent - Wrote Mr Dwight ack. his letter & Draft of 74.56. & 25 Dolls given to Mr Prat - interest to Jany 1st 99.56. After Dinner laid down with Miss Tayler and read together two beautiful letters of Stanleys arrival at the Western coast of Africa and his return with his men to Zanzibar. - beautiful letters. full of heart he has grown with his work. Went to Capitol to meet Silas Stebbins and see Members. he did not arrive, but Major Bunnel called out Senators & limited them. I went to the House. Saw Mr Glover & Judge Conger - he saw members for me, who promised to come. 2 still wanted to ask more, but it got late & tired and came home at 4. - I had Mrs Melcher come [in] to wash for herself Mrs Taylor went to Capital with me. Saw a few men but very slow. at length I would call on Gene Butler he was in his office, gave some advice. was kind & pleasant, Wednesday at evening Mrs Hitz & Mr Westfall came & wished me to go to Secty of Navy tomorrow, to consult about work for Labor [G?] or an article which had approved on work for the fr[???] Bot papers & envelopes for notes Thursday Went with Mrs. Hitz to Depts. could not see Secty of Navy invited Gene Townsend & Dr? Crane to my evening at Cap Hill on Saturday at 7 o clock 2 Mrs Melcher came to sew I wrote invitations to members to the number of 22, asking them to meet at Mr Hitz on Sat eve at 7 o clock. Mr Hitz called to say he was going to NJ. & that Mr. Seward would oppose the signing -at evening Mrs Hitz came as on previous page - Thursday, February 21, 1878. See previous page -- Genl Townsend & Genl Crane both declined thrgh policy I went to Capital deliverd my notes by Maj Bunnel & Judge Congen, & came here so tired. A 5½ I went dine at Mrs Slineys - Hultz Heald all went. came home- early, and I went to bed so tired Friday, February 22, 1878. Remained home, Mrs Melar here, gets on slowly in sewing I have a letter from Dr App[?] & Mr. Monier a day or two ago in answer to mine of six weeks ago. At evening came Mr. & Mrs. Hoyt - Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Shepard, - I asked Mrs Shepard to help me revise the History of the Red +, to read tomorrow eveng, and read it for me. I would go to Mrs Hitz early next day. They stayed a little late and I had to leave the parlor. I was so tired this is a hard week - 1013. T. Saturday, February 23, 1878. cool. Mrs. Melcher here - 2 I paid her weeks work $2. Went at 10 to Cap. Hill. took a box of papers for the meeting, thought Mrs. Shep. would help cut the article and read it at night - found her ill in bed. Went to Hitz & worked all day on the paper alone. So tired, and so alone in my work - At 4 Mrs Hitz cam. M. H came from NY She is in trouble about her work - at 7½ Judge Conger & wife came - Mrs Davis of Cal. & Farney of Ala waited for more, but only M & Mrs. Taylor came. I read my own article, talked some, came to no conclusion. Judge Conger astonished that no more came. I came home with M & Mrs. Taylor tired, and wanted to go home and let it all go. 1013. 1st Wash. - Fine -- went with Papa Holmes to see Mrs Hitz - he tells her here to arrange machinery for paper cutting for the Labor Exchange. She is gratified, for her work was almost done. came home with Mr & Mrs Hitz. call from Mr Stebbins - My work must rest. Mr Hitz will see Mr Seward and find how the land lies. he thinks it likely that I shall have to start with an incorporation of a National Society, and thus compel International union. 1913. 1st Fine - warm - Mrs. Melcher came to sew. I had slept so much I was better than for a long time, circulation calm & no beating of the finger balls, I sewed on the polonais, and puff for skirt. A man came to bring me a pleating machine. 1.00. sent by Mrs. Hitz - 1.00 Mrs Hoyt, & Mrs. Whitney to lunch. M Westfall came at night I was tired & slept poorly -- letter from Waldo -- Still sewing, the old suit almost done. Mrs. Taylor & Holmes went to [?ee??ten] -- I pleated the first florence - my new pleater - am so tired today - last week was hard - & this recent = letter from Miss Austin, tells me that Mrs Brot wants to sell her house - Mrs. Shepard came to spend an hour or two. She is full of business down town, & "all over." -- Papers from Mr. Arnold & a scrap of printed letter from Rochester Minn, Rosemary P.O. Box 300. Alluding to the time I was there with Sally & Turing -- so long -- so good Wednesday, February 27, 1878. Mr Hetz called to report his [?] to State Dept. - the Red + has been presented 3 times, twice declined unoficialy, once officially. He thinks the State Dept cannot directly accept after this - I suggest that to see Genl Butler- he will with Genl M[?] - if I would introduce him. I write a letter to take it to Mr Majer I go to Mr Hetz to say he must go at once if the Genl goes out of town for 2 weeks He will go tomorrow evening. - They will see if any plan can be made to get around the difficulty. I meet Delphine Baker at the office. She has a joint Resolution Passed grants [?]m shores of Point Lookout to her from South. Mrs Holmes Taylor went to Mr Ar- nold's. I come home to keep house with Annie Letter from Fanny asking for money. Letter from Hail. Buletins from Seneca (Dr Apia) Paid Mrs Melcher for this week 2$ gave her old pocket Book - Thursday, February 28, 1878. Fine, warm. Mrs. Melcher came to cut a dress for May of an old skirt of Mrs Holmes. Madam Zacker. May and I went to that Avenue. Bat 2 dresses for Madame. Two black skirts for Mr.s Mel- cher -- 10 yds Black calico @ 6. 60 9 yds alpaca @ .25 .75 Braid @ .8 .16 3 yds cotten @ .8 24 aprons for May @ 4 1/2 175 15 1.90 Went to [?] Hall to see Douglas. too late. may go tomorrow again. I want to find a place for [?]. Sent 6 dolls to Fanny to run house. beg eval. a note missing This is the evening when Mr Hertz & Genl Murphy will see Genl Butler. Wrote Baron B?otts for Blankets Mamma Holmes $120 warm as May - wrote Miss Austin. Mrs. Melcher came at May. (Later) at 10 I went to see M Douglas. ( ) May- he was in court. I waited for him to come in. he was kind & genial. Invited me to visit him on Sunday at his house in Union Town. I spoke to him of Golay and the exchange I wanted to make. he did not see any plan by which it could be done. I called at Mrs. Hetz. could not wait to see her as I was anxious about May- went to Carter's & bot 6 yds black calico @ 6 ,36 " " alpaca @25 1,25 1,61 came home, found Mrs. Brown. Cut Polenair for Mrs. Melcher ( Mrs ) I sent a note to Mamma with $20 dolls, for her kindness to me, and she came up to ac- -knowledge it. she seemed to be very grateful, when it is I who should have all the gratitude. Went to town with Mrs. Taylor called on Mrs. Brooks- Mrs. Fassett- Carters to buy calico. cambric dress for Fanny 12 1/2 yd for 1.00 dress Mrs. Melcher 10 yds .62 check muslin @ ,12 1/2 .30 cotton 2 yds .12 Too late for pension office- closed at 4. At 6 1/2 Mr. Ramsey came. later Mr and Mrs. Wheling Mr and Mrs Heitz. Dr Hoyt the latter read a paper on "woman" this is the 2nd of the meetings which we hope to enlarge and establish into a branch of social science- or a school of Public Utility. It has no amusements but much conversation on practical (___) pertaining to the well and better being of the various classes of society. This way we paired the question of agricul- -ture and horticulture as an employment to be taught to girls- and women- It was propered that I read something on the Red Cross next meeting. News of the death of Benjamin Wade Sunday, March 3, 1878. Rainy morning. Cleared at 10 and I decided to go to Fred Douglass. left at 1 1/2 went to navy yard. waited for a Union Town Car till it began almost to rain. it sprinkled while on the bridge and rained before I got to the turn- I stopped at a house of a Mrs. Lee whose first husband was (Wagner?) the baker of the army bread in the (___) in 62 (___) here (___) M. Wilson. After it cleared I went on, to a most beautiful hill over the river, among the spruce. The finest view my eyes have taken in in a long time. it was 3 1/2- they were at dinner Mr. Douglas came in with a Mrs. Green of (___), who came yesterday to visit them. She heard me in Mechanics Hall. The visit was genial. We spoke of (___) (___). Douglas description of him was magnificent- he understands him. I spoke of my European work and the Red Cross (symbol Cross) We chatted till near sundown when the carriage was made ready once Mr. D. Mrs Green. Mrs Sprague his daughter took me to the (cars?) at the capital. It is arranged then on Tuesday at 11. I go to meet her at the City Hall and later her home with me Monday, March 4, 1878 at 10 I went to Pension office. Saw Mr. Whel(pley?)- (Vidones?) clerk. found him dissatisfied with Dr. Culver and advised that I take the care out of her hands and employ no one. get the required testimony. Went to send Maj. (___) who drew up a form to be taken to the clerk of court at City Hall revoking Dr. Culver Power of Atty Said the care had been misman- aged. that the (___) in it could be got in ten days. She would get pay from date of death at 8 - 9 dolls a month that some $500 were due I think it will be more as he was a sergeant. came home tired. Mrs Melchin went to get testimony. I came to bed. Tuesday, March 5, 1878. very weak and almost ill- have symptoms of bile & neuralgia, have had a hard night: high fever, am chilled At 10 go with Mrs Taylor and Mrs Melcher to Court House to meet Mrs. Green and M. Douglas and revoke Mrs Melcher's Power of Atty: to Dr. Chas Culver in her pension claim. Called at Gen. Muzzies. Mrs M paid him .50 its for paper drawing. he went with us to court. Mr. Meig's took oath- (name wrong at last) paid .30 for oath. gave Mrs. Melcher 125 to get more testimony. she left. we took Mrs. Green. went to Labor Exchange to White House. to Corcorans Gallery [*50 [*30 [*1.25___ [*2.05*] I came home earlier, laid down Mrs. Taylor & Green came at 3. latter left at 3½ to meet Mr. Douglas - I am too ill to be up and retire. I find that Mrs. Melcher signed her name Alice & The paper commences with Julia Mel. Albert Gleason at court house he did not seem to see me. but it is'n hardly possible I carried the Resolution. copy of letter to the President, and one Bulletin to Genl Muzzy that he should get proper terms in the paper. he will draw up for Genl Butter to present. Wednesday, March 6, 1878. We judge the future by the past But we prove the past by the future. Fine day. a little better. think the tomatoes i am eating take effect on the liver & bile by the appearance. it is perhaps well for spring. Laid down most of the day. Wrote Hail. Sheppy, a call at evening from Mr. and Mrs. Johnston of VST She is comdt of Rochester Dem. he in Treasury. Read letter from George B. Ferguson, a Bordentown pupil who lives in Harmony Ind. he was one of the "old Brick" scholars, left Bor. 24 years ago, he says. I cannot reach him, - Mrs. Melcher has brot most of her testimony Thursday, March 7, 1878. Warm- Sunny- Wrote a letter to Commission of Pensions that Mrs. Melcher had revoked Power of Atty also to CP. Culver. Took her to office found they had made the error of names. Mr Whelply thought the testimony sufficient - would have it sent up to him this PM- or write if more were needed. I came away feeling the work done & the Pension gained- called at Mrs. Mel. on my way home. Call from Mrs. Weaver, Mrs. Smith- ate soup too rich for dinner. am sure it will make me ill- am thirsty after it. sleep poorly- How poor and simple my living must be to let me keep on my feet -. Wrote Geo Ferguson. Minnie Mrs. Gage- Read from two letters and Miss Austen this morning. Friday, March 8, 1878. Fine. I was correct about the dinner. I am ill. had designed to call on Mr. Elliot of Govt Print Office to ask a place for Golay, but have an attack of Bile - and keep on my bed most of the day. read Harper - came to the conclusion that I had best go home and let better persons run the world. I am perfectly happy to be an outsider- how good it is not to be goaded by ambition. I buy some food at Steels for Mrs. Melcher- a chicken - .35 - pork .6 cabbage .7 Parsnips 6. Butter 9 sugar 8 = ,71 = clerk would send them over- Little May here I clean her hair and comb it. Mrs. Westfall came at evening to see if I were ill. She feels that they may move. Saturday, March 9, 1878. Fine- very warm- Started to do today what I could not yes- terday- to look a situation for Abram Went to Dr. Hoods in Pension Bureau He became conversant with Melcher care. - Walked up 12 to NY (ave?)- took car to Printing Office. Mr. Elliot gone out with his wife- went to home staid to lunch- I ate a bit of bread & a ginger snap & took a nap. Mr E did not return. At 3 went again to see Mr. Elliot- told him of Abram he is not sure but he can have a place for him among fine machinery & tools in a month he will try. They will come next week to visit us- There's a little hope I think- I lost my little white net shawl in the car. Went to look for at at office- closed- called at Mrs. Melchers with Mr. Taylor while there Mr. Westfall came- he had been to bring me some but- termilk & had seen Mr. Ramsey, was greatly (depressed?).... Mr. H(raises?) his rent. I am tired of the woes of the (world?) Sunday, March 10, 1878 Warm. Laid down most of the morning with Mrs. Taylor. In PM called on the S(Lineys?) to get some ink to write Katie's poetry & to ask about firemen. Did not tell him of my plan from Mrs. Brooks. (___) came talked with Mrs. Taylor. We decided to go to Fred Douglas in morning, (tell?) him the plan, get to the head of fire Dept; tell them, get interest of (___) then get the correspondents we know to write (simultaneously?), to different parts of the county. To interest the fire companies in the scheme. I did not sleep well. Could not digest my dinner & believe I will give up dinner. Monday, March 11, 1878. Rain, cleared off 10. cut skirt for Mrs Melcher. advised her no to move. changed the plan of aiding Mrs Brooks at the suggestion of Mrs Taylor who feels doubtful of her application on practical abilits - We do not go Mr Reed took us out to ride Mr Arnold called to ask for notes & statistics for a Magazine article I told him of the Red cross - he took the translated History to read. I thought it might be well to tell the Press how it stands. and let the people know the facts I declined to eat dinner to see how it affects my sleep - I have eaten only my breakfast of rusk & milk today. drank hot water twice feel as well now at 8 1/2 Pm as if I had eaten dinner. Bot Postage stamps - $1.00 - family went to hear Fred Douglas lecture. Tuesday, March 12, 1878 Rainy morning. rained very hard in the night - I slept better on my empty stomach than before on a dinner I pleated Mrs Melcher fluence Mamma Holmes went to Georgetown and fell at the street car. spraining her right shoulder. Mrs Shepard came she is nursing Mrs Brook of rheumatism. I wrote Miss Austen & read a letter from her that Prof Krebs house will be for sale at twice the price of Mrs B[?????] that seems high for no land I have done very little. but it seems to me that I must get ready & go home to settle myself for the year, I get out of my last year confusion - of rent - Harriet is certainly very kind. and I think wants me to make a home in Dans[????] perhaps Prof Krebs will rent [???] house to me - [?????] Mari[?]n Waite Wednesday, March 13, 1878. Rainy. Mama better but lame Mrs Meleher came for pleating I thought to go to town, but rained Wrote Brown, Vene. Harriot The day did not go well. Mrs Westfall came at night said they had a carriage & harness. I will try to have a horse and ride to make my calls She almost decides to keep the house at 35 Dolls & take boarders I think I must see Mr Hitz and find if I can go home to remain now. & if I must come back to be here when the Red Cross is presented in the house. Thursday, March 14, 1878. cool. showery. - A call from Mrs. French. went with Mrs. Taylor down 7th st - she to see Mrs Brooks I to Westfalls to look at carriage. saw their house. very neat. told him to take the agency of Millers cook stove & set it up on [??????]. I called on Mr Hitz at lunchtime. exchanged Drafts for $150 Dolls to be drawn on his Bank. he advises me not to dis[?????] my Bonds, thinks them safe - he wished me to return to help the Bill through when Genl Butler presents it I went to call on Mr Ramsey who thought I might tell Dr [?????] about Westfall. cam home at 3 met Mr Parker in 14 cars. - Found letters from Geo Ferguson - Mrs Weeks [??] Hayes asking recommendation for her - commence to [????????] Had a call from Delphine Baker it is her 51 birthday. She has a Bill before congress. is good & kind as of old. more business like this practical - but I like her. 10/2 [?] {/} Friday, March 15, 1878. Very fine morning. grew dull. had intended to go to Bank. & Fassetts but Mrs Taylor not ready. made a wadded sleeve for Mamas lame arm. went to RR office & found my shawl then to 86 st to Gleasons. Mrs Gleason met me so cordially & told me Irene was in town, and in great trouble. has got to the end of his property. & is nearly distracted. has left home not telling any one where he went. Does not want it known he is in town. will not stay at Alberts has a suit in court today. Albert is in trouble too. and selling out his houses. pulling his furniture out of his hands. cannot help Irene even to the interest on his mortgages from the year some 300 $ which we gave his farm from immediate sale I will hope to see Irene tomorrow Westfall came to say he had a horse. but I have one from Albert Slineys called. Saturday, March 16, 1878. Fine. Went early to town - Mrs Tayler & Annie to market - I to German American Bank - drew check through M Hitz? - 150. Met Mrs Clare on 7th st - went up the stairs of the old rooms & looked in the hall. Natural. Went to Carters Met Mrs. Taylor - looked down the shops & purchased Prints at 5 cts. 200 yds - 10. Ira had a boil on his lip, and was almost in a fit - looked like an idiot from the effects of his medicine - took them home, got trunk, put Iras feet in mustard water and got them to bed - Sam had not been in bed for four weeks and looked worn out. It was a sorry sight to see the the two try to walk - they staggered, and Ira could not speak intelligently. Saturday, June 8, 1878 Both slept some, but Sam watched Ira constantly for fear of a fit. Iras mouth was very sore he could just walk down stairs was taking 4 spoonfuls of patent medicine p day which completely stupefied him. I got it cut down a little, got him into the study to rest; he went asleep and slept 8 hours before night; and 10 after making 18 hours in 24, & his medicine reduced 1/3. Miss Austin came to dine and met them for the first, the Dr will see Ira & Sam tomorrw - I ask to go to the cure to eat while Sam is here Sunday, June 9, 1878. Ira much brighter. She'll reduce his medicine to no fit - Sam and I go to care to breakfast & Waldo takes Ira for examination by Dr Jas C. at 9. - The examination was delightful. he gave all encouragement. Dolls per week - Waldo will later charge of him will not set a price. and Sam cannot find and what to offer him. I tell him to let it remain as it is. I am glad the poor little fellow is here, it is his last chance I know, I am glad to give it to him but it takes the ease all out of our home, henceforth we are all watchers.
