Fairbanks - 4= Washington, Pa - W. C. Wiley 8 Washington Aug. 31st 68 H. M Meek Esq Your letter of 26' recd ~ am happy to be able to reply that I think I can meet your wishes - - my determination to visit Europe early this Autumn was very strong - but the "outside pressure" has been so great, that I have partially yielded to it and consented to remain, if not the entire winter, at least a portion of it - and I should have felt bound in honor to write you to this effect had you not re-written me as you did. I have hitherto been too much occupied even to reply to your letters myself and scarce know what my clerk may have said- but I recalled that you have asked my terms and presume none have been given in return - My terms before all Literacy " Christian & Lyceum associations have invariably been $100 per evening When called by solders organizations I claimed the privilege of remitting one quarter - and have as invariably made my terms $95 for them and they have always made money by the lecture - This was mainly in the West - But Maine, tho is one of the grandest of the old home states has a different locality and I presume a somewhat less enthusiastic and lecture going people than the wilder & younger West Considering all this + + + I decide to reduce once more and ask if $60 per evening will do you - or still further provided they could be well arranged for consecutive nights with little or no loss of time I would speak 20 evenings for $1000, or 25 evening for $1200 I always defray my own expenses -- Title - Work &c &c must not tell my terms abroad write me both to Washington & Worcester send addressed envelopes -- Clara Barton. 2 Wash Oct 15 1868 F. G. Gillson Esq -- (Woonsocket) Yours of Oct. 10t forwarded to my home It has not been my purpose to speak the coming season, and until very recently I have steadily refused all applications and up to the present time have accepted nothing but the calls of the posts of the G.A.R. I may find it it conve- nient to respond to a few of these and if so. yours shall be one if you desire - I could not fix a date quite yet. but it would probably after December My terms for all organizations of soldiers are $75 for Societies & Lyceum $100 add Wash. Clara Barton -- 3 Wash. 15th Oct-68 G.W. Knight Esq. North Uxbridge Yours of Sept-29. has been forward to me at my home. It has not been my purpose to speak the coming season and have referred all applications excepting a few from the GAR. I may find it convenient to respond to some of these and will try to make yours one of the number if you desire. I could not fix upon a time quite yet, but it would probably be after December. My terms for the GAR and all organ of soldiers are 75 - other 100 address Wash Clara Barton 4 Washington D.C. Oct. 15-68 John W Fairbanks. Westboro Mass. Your letters and myself have very nearly played a game of Bopeep, but finally we have all met at my home in this city— Really it would seem that after all your pains I ought not refuse your kind request,—but— my applications for the coming season are so numerous that I have adopted it as a new rule not to accept any invitation where I had ever spoken before- I surely could not come in December and if Post Sedgwick can make up its mind that it can dispense with me little better than not, I think it would be for its interest to do so And I believe that upon reflection you will decide that some one entirely new to your audience will be more profitable for your post Submitting the matter I remain with many good wishes the terms unchanged 75 5 Wash. 27th Oct 68 A M. Meek Your communications of both the 22nd & 24. are received; I will endeavor to accede to your proposition of the third week in Dec. if I am able. It is with great regret that I am compelled to inform you that my health which has always been perfect, my comfort and my pride, has by some unaccountable means commenced to fail me. How I have transgressed natures laws I certainly do not know, but steadily and surely my strength is wasting, and unless in some way arrested I can do very little in two months from now. It seems very absurd to promise what one will at the top of a hill when he sees himself constantly sliding towards the bottom. But I promise if I can to speak for you then and there Very truly Clara Barton Washington Oct. 27-68 Frank A Warthew Esq Dr your letter of the 20th met [?] - My terms for all literary & legal societies are usually $100. – for all organizations of Soldiers I have as invariably reduced this to 75. In this case considering the number you desire, the object and location I should reduce once more and say $65—per evening. this is less than I have ever spoken for and less than ordinarily I should intend to Clara Barton 6 Boston Nov 29 W H Richardson Port Chester NY Have two lectures will deliver one for S 75 or two if on successive nights 125, [Lettes?] &c Clara Barton 7 J W B[e]aker Marlboro mass Terms 75- subject Stories of the War or Field of Camp Addres for ten days Worcester after this Washington D C Nov 29. 68 Boston Mass. 8 Boston Nov 29 / 68 Messr Wiley, McKee & Boon Washington, Pa Shall probably make up a route to be pulled in Jan & Feb, terms 75 - or two lectures if on successive nights 125 - Clara Barton Golden Wash. 1878 Left for Washington Oct -- Drew before leaving from Bank - 200 Drew again in December before coming home again 150 From the above monies I paid all travelling expenses.
