Ford & Shaw, Proprietors New York, Jan. 19th 1899 Miss Clara Barton Dear Cousin: Dr. and Mrs. Brown did me very great service in Brooklyn. I have made studies rapidly in my business. Circumstances connected with this business will require me to furnish some data from Washington which I can only obtain by going there. If agreeable to night or tomorrow for me to see you I will call. After seeing you and Dr. Hubbell I shall return to Washington. Awaiting your convenience. I am gratefully and affect your cousin Robt W Barton Robert Barton [*34*] Jan. 19-99 [1900?] [*40*] Dickens House 38th St and 7th Ave. New York City Miss Clara Barton. My Dear Cousin: I have applied through my congressman Hon P.D. McCulloch for an appointment as a Surgeon W.S. Vol Service in the Philipines. Would you kindly inclose me letters introducing and requesting my appointment to His Exellency the President Wm McKinley and the Hon Theodore Roosevelt Vice President? It is my desire to inclose your indorsement to the President and Vice President requesting their recommendations of my appointment. I would consider my life well spent to unite my own loyalty to our government with that of my ancestors who served in Revolutionary and 1812 [and] bridging the chasm of 61 to 65. Not only my own desire but ambitions for my boy actuates me in this 2. course and I hope you will help me secure the appointment in any way you can. I have been in New York since Jan 4th. My little girl Mary Garland and Robt White Jr are together at 1207 Wst Lanvale St. Baltimore. As unworthy as I am my dear cousin I have asked God nightly to restore you to health. I trust you are much better. I have met Dr Lesser twice since I have been here. He has been very kind and curtious. If my Government will give me the appointment I seek I shall serve with an eye singly to a discharge of my duty-worthy of such a country. I am sincerely and affectionately Your Cousin Robt W Barton New York City 38th St and 7th Ave. Transcribed and reviewed by volunteers participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
