Mayfield & Dillinger, Galveston, Texas, Feb 2, 1904 My dear Aunt Clara -- I have written you twice since I received your letter & as yet have rec'd no reply. I saw Ward the other day in Houston & he was telling me of you, and of some of the troubles the "Washington Parasites" are trying to cause you. How I would love to be with you every day - and know just exactly how everything was going - more particularly, to know from condition, and see that you got all necessary attention. As I have told you before, if I had money, I would be right where I could always be near you - We never get in this life the things that would give us most pleasure. I do hope you will not let those Washington friends cause you too much worry. I would let the whole matter drop and rest in peace theDr. J. C. Mayfield, STATE QUARANTINE STATION. G.A. You have the sympathy of the whole world & its entire confidence, and in combination of Mussey & her friends can do you the slightest harm. And in time they will as surely break their own necks. Have you entirely freed yourself from your chills, yet? It may take Spring months to do it. I do hope and pray that you will regain your health. I feel sure you will. Well, Galveston is building up very rapidly. The water swept district is covered with what they call Red Cross houses. Little 2 & 3 roomed cottages, And they are very comfortable. Mayfield & Dillinger, Galveston, Texas, March 2d 1902 My dear Aunt Clara: - Your dear kind and welcome letter, & received a few days ago. Was so glad to know that you are feeling better. I know with the return of Spring and nice pleasant weather, you will regain your health and be your dear self again. If we do not then heave another calamity to call you away. The two letters that I wrote you, were both addressed to Glen Echo. One was in a plain envelope & the other was from the Fremont Hotel. There was nothing in there regarding the Red Cross work, or Mrs. M- so if they go astray in Washington they will only be in for-cased with my love & adoration of you - Of which, I would be proud for every one to know. Am only sorry you did not receive. For I do not wish you to think me neglectful of Dr. J. C. Mayfield, STATE QUARANTINE STATION. G.A. Dillinger, M.D. 115 AND 116 LEVY BUILDING, TELEPHONE 908 2. Drs. Mayfield & Dillinger, Galveston, Texas, 189 such a [of least] privilege, I have had, however, the same trouble with my correspondence to others, especially with my Father. I had a very pleasant visit from Mrs. Ward yesterday, Took dinner with him at the Hotel. And then had him up to the House & out for a drive. We had a long talk over Red Cross matters. How I do wish I could be of some useful help to you. But I know right will Triumph bye and bye - I shall only be delighted to contribute my letter or "personal appearance" at any time you want either or both - I worried for a long way to show up some people I think. And I could come nearly doing it - & be there. I have known for a long while that some people are capable of almost anything. -Dr. J. C. Mayfield, STATE QUARANTINE STATION. G.A. Dillinger, M.D. 115 AND 116 LEVY BUILDING, TELEPHONE 908 3. Drs. Mayfield & Dillinger, Galveston, Texas, 189 My dear Aunt, I will be compelled I think within the next 3 or 4 weeks to leave Galveston. In the first place. - the town if too not healthy to keep my family here. They will go home I think in 2 or 3 weeks. And 2nd place - Dr Mayfield has been forced by the Governor to give up his interest in the shipping, without Dr. Mayfield's influence and partnership, I can never make a living out of this practice. And especially as it comes at the close of the season. And a long chill summer before me. There is no money here, now in the general private practice. Three of our leading Physicians have left and 3 or 4 Dentists, and a number of Lawyers, Singularly because people will not pay. And you can't make them. I have barely made a living this winter. The number of ships in, as Dr. J. C. Mayfield, STATE QUARANTINE STATION. G.A. Dillinger, M.D. 115 AND 116 LEVY BUILDING, TELEPHONE 908 4. Drs. The only think I see is to go in the Army as Contract Surgeon for a year at least. at $150- per month. Col. Cleary of N.J. Ag San Antonio, who is the head Surgeon of this dept. is anxious for me to try it. If I can have some one present my application to Gen. Sternberg. I know you could not ask Gen. S. for any favors. but, you may possibly know someone, Senator or Representative of who could present my application to him. They are anxious for Volunteer Surgeons. And all that is necessary is to have your application handed to Gen. Sternberg by some influential person, As Senator or Representative and he, [the] Gen. Stern - then ordersDr. J. C. It is not asking a favor from a Senator or the President, as asking for an Office or appointment would be, but it simply recommending the Application. Of course, now my Ambassador is a Democrat And is of no earthly use - If you know any one whom you could ask to hand my application to Sternberg I will extend it to you. Or if you could drop a request to McKinley a line from him would cinch it. But if you do not know of any one, in any way, to reach the Gen. I will try it single handed, which will of course be of little use, Then I shall have to look for other employment outside of medicine for a while. It is a matter of necessity As I will only have enough money to last me an other month Dr. J. C. Mayfield, STATE QUARANTINE STATION. G.A. Dillinger, M.D. 115 AND 116 LEVY BUILDING, TELEPHONE 908 6. Miles when I was last in Washington, ashamed have asked him to recommend, but now I dont like to do it. But [if] my dear, I think you have your hands full, and if you can't conveniently do this don't worry about it at all. Let me hear from you real soon as to the Report to Mrs. m - for our health and everything for it - all is of uttermost interest to me, and your health is as one of my own. Family. I expect to close my Offices here by April 18th. but I will stay on a while in Galveston myself - until I see further. With regards & Love from Mrs. D- and the greatest & best Baby in the world and love & kisses for myself - Cares ever and Always from devoted nephew Arthur -
