Started for M.V. with Mr. and Mrs. Barrows. Mrs. Rubin, Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Stepansky, their ten children and Alcibiades. Baby cried most of the way. Nice swift ride up island. Ida Goldfarb came with us as maid. We stopped a minute to speak to Floy. Aunt Nettie came out to greet us, all smiles, at Brown Cottage. After we were in it began to rain, and blew great [?] all night. Ther. SUN. JUNE 30, 1907 Wea. Called on Mrs. Willie Mayhew, Aunt Nettie and the Rubins in Drift wood. The children rushed at me open- mouthed; they were playing and having a lovely time. I took them to the beach; then over to our spring. Before that I finished sweeping the house for them, & Mrs. Rubin helped me dust and we speculated as to its possibilities for a sort of fresh-air house for summer children & mothers.Ther. Fri. Wrote some foreign letters and contributions for Globe symposium. Told the Driftwood boys they must carry water for their mothers or be sent back to Boston. Made the rounds of the houses with Papa; found Nannie hoeing the garden; talked with Aunt Nettie. Papa lent his umbrella to Mrs. Stepansky, who was walking up with Mrs. Rubin to the shore. Called with Papa on Chester Poole, who said he & his father knew nothing about our boundary; then on Willie Mayhew, who refused to let us see the old deeds & complained that 14 years ago he was promised that I would pay him $100 for right to take peat. Papa read us Mr. Dooley on suffrage, on Aunt Nettie's piazza.Ther. MON. JULY 13, 1907 Wea. Saw Papa off by the early stage. Made a round of calls at the houses. Slept all the P.M. Took some medicine to May Bruno, whose teeth were troubling her. Read "The Colonel's Daughter", & sat up too late.Ther. SUN. JULY 21, 1907 Wea. Ethel got back from Europe to M.V. Uncle G., Emma & Anna drove over, & I called at Mystery Cottage with them. Ther. MON. JULY 22, 1907 Wea. Hammond brought action against Elliot, & Ethel & I had a talk with him about it, & I wrote to Papa & to the Vineyard Gazette. It is for going through Hillie Mayhew's place Make my usual calls.Ther. TUES. JULY 23, 1907 Wea. Ida Goldfarb had lost a $5. A searching party was sent out, and little Isidor Freeman found it, to our great joy. Sat with Aunt Nettie in her white sun bonnet in the shade of one of her young fruit trees, and she told me she wanted to write about the need of ethical instruction in the schools. Ther. WED. JULY 24, 1907 Wea. Walked up to the store with Mrs. Rubin and the little Freeeman boys and changed books at the library. Mrs. Rubin sold the phonograph.Ther. THURS. JULY 25, 1907 Wea. Little Moses Freeman pushed off in a boat on Juitsy pond, couldn't row it, & was crying, & his brother crying on shore & trying to wade out to him. I rowed out & towed him in. Ther. FRI. JULY 26, 1907 Wea. A rainy day, much needed. Reynold & Lizzie took two of the little Russians from Driftwood out fishing, to their great delight. Papa arrived & we made a little round of calls at the different houses.Ther. SAT. JULY 27, 1907 Wea. Walked over to the G. D. S. with Papa; glorious day. Found Mr. Belden there, to our surprise. He had brought down little Ethel. After dinner, Emma drove us to P. O., & Walter took me to Brown Cottage, while Papa went to find Mayhew's to arrange about a berrying party, & to the Creek to see Mrs. Smith about duds; & he & Elliot came & had supper late. Agnes & Tom arrived, Ther. SUN. JULY 28, 1907 Wea. [*15*] Nannie's lost kitten was heard down the dry well. Chester Poole, Papa & Reynold Rogers tried in vain to get her out. Agnes & Tom arrived. Elliot came early in A. M. to look for boundary rock, & Reynold in late afternoon plunged about looking for it under water, while Papa, Ethel & I looked on.Ther. MON. JULY 29, 1907 Wea. Got editorials & stuff off for the Journal. Emma called, looking sweet in a white sunbonnet. Dreamed Haywood was declared guilty. Papa went home. Grace walked to beach. Reynold went home. Ther. TUES. July 31, 1907 Wea. Lizzie Rogers took the Driftwood children to fish from the moored boat near Ethel's, Wrote some letters. Ther. Thurs. Aug. 1, 1907 Wea. Got off foreign letters. Dr. Huntington arrived. Lal told me with much spirit the sequel to "She".Ther. Fri. Aug. 2, 1907 Wea. Wrote letters for papers. Reread "What's Mine is Mine," & focused some comfort in it. Our mail had gone [to] astray. Went out with lantern to box, met stage & brought home two days' mail in one. (Mrs. Barrows was fretting to hear from Esther). Ther. Sat. Aug. 3, 1907 Wea. Watched out for Aunt Ey for some time; finally she arrived, & Papa with her. We made an evening all at the Huntingtons, with Agnes & Tom, whose last night it was. Travers showed me nice photos of the children at Winning Farm. Mr. Hammond wrote that he would remove the fence if I could show him it was wrong.Ida Goldfarb was out with her friend. [Ther. SUN. AUG 4, 1907 Wea.] Papa and I took supper with Ethel at her house, after going out rowing with her on the pond in her new canoe-like boat, rowing up toward my land at Gay Head, Seeing the sunset, and landing on gull island, where we saw eggs and a baby [*gull*] Ther. MON. AUG 5, 1907 Wea. Mrs. Rubin and Mrs. Freeman came over with the children in the evening and they gave us a farewell serenade. In the morning LIzzie Rogers took them fishing. Ida was out with Mr. Weinberg. Emma took Papa blueberrying. Esther Barrows arrived. Ther. TUES. AUG. 6, 1907 Wea. [To] Went to Boston with Papa, Ada Watson, reported Beth's twins much better. Ada is going to Germany. Mrs. Freeman & the four boys, Emmanuel, Moses, Abraham & Isidor; also Mary Stefausky. Ther. WED. AUG. 7, 1907 Wea. Drew $200 from savings bank for Ada Watson & $400 for Mr. Karekin, & did various errands. Had a talk with Ada in the evening, about what she has been doing, etc. She said her natural tendency was to be selfish & she was going to try to be less so.Ther. THURS. AUG. 8, 1907 Wea. Returned to Chilmark, with little Sadie Stepansky, by morning boat, Papa, Mary Stepansky & her father, and Mr. Weinberg saw us off. Bought a watermelon at Vineyard Haven & ate half of it on the way up. Found little Lizzie Stepansky ill with tonsilitis; went down to share with Ida to see Dr. Huntington, who was out on pond. Ther. FRI. AUG. 9, 1907 Wea. Writing letters to get off by last mail. We were concerned about little Lizzie's throat; Eddy Rubin's became sore, too. Dr. Huntington thinks it is only tonsilitis. Aunt Ey dined with us. Mrs. Willie Mayhew pleased with the Teddy bear I brought & Lal with the camera.Ther. SAT. AUG. 10, 1907 Wea. Made my calls. The children at Driftwood were better, much to our relief. Nannie had a dinner party from Vineyard Haven, and Frances brought her two little [fe] fresh-air girls over for a day's picnic. After supper I called at Driftwood, and Mrs. Rubin walked with me to the bars and we stood there some time and talked. Ther. SUN. AUG. 11, 1907 Wea. Decided to go up to Boston in order to go to the celebration of Mamma's Birthday at West Brookfield with Papa. Made my usual round of calls in A.M and walked on the shore wth Mrs. Rubin in the P.M. Ther. MON. AUG. 12, 1907 Wea Went to Boston, with Emma, Howard, Helen and the two little Beitch girls, Surprised Papa and he and Emma and Miss Gilbert and I had luch in the office. Did shopping and things. Ther. TUES. AUG. 13, 1907 Wea. Went to W. Brookfield with Papa, Emma and Mrs. Harriet Eager, to celebration of 89th Anniversary of Mamma's birthday. A beautiful time. Clara Barlow was looking thin and unwell. Gave her $10. Came back to Boston with Papa.Ther. WED. AUG. 14, 1907 Wea. Mr. Gulisian came to office & told me his experience with the Hunchagist assassin. Came down to Chilmark, Papa seeing me off. Mrs. Adadaurian & her daughter came up on the stage with me, & it was moonlight the last part of the [we] way. Ther. THURS. AUG. 15, 1907 Wea. Wrote letters, & took over some bags of peanuts (adorned by Esther) in honor of Willie Rubin's 4th birthday. After supper, with Lal's help, I [cu] cut Mr. Hammond's wires across our steps; & then took a moonlight walk with Mrs. Rubin.Ther. FRI. AUG. 16, 1907 Wea. Florence took lunch with us, and afterwards as we walked over to the Brown Cottage we fought as to which should carry some library books and rolled over on the grass like two puppies; and fought again at Aunt Ey's; and I beat her by scattering her hair pins and felt quite young and jolly. Ther. SAT. AUG. 17, 1907 Wea. Waled up to the library and back with Mrs. Rubin. Sat up late reading Rider Haggard's "The Brethren."Ther. SUN. AUG. 18, 1907 Wea. Had a long talk with Aunt Ey, and she told me of Anna's engagement to Mr. Belden. Soon after. Emma came over and annouced it. Got off press material for Mrs. Upton. Ther. MON. AUG 19, 1907 Wea. Got off [fresh] letter to [material etc for] Mrs. Upton and stuff for Journal. The rest of the family went on a picnic at supper time to Panorama Hill, where Ethel is building a summer house; and I wrote till late, and sat down to supper just as they were getting back.Ther. TUES. AUG. 20, 1907 Wea. [Got off stuff for Journal. The rest of] Went up to the store with Mrs. Rubin, who tried to get her huband by long distance telephone. Went over with Mrs. Davis to Ethel's and Ethel took us out on the pond, and up to Panorama Hill. A heavenly day, and afterwards a most lovely blue.
