FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT GUEST SPEAKER ON PREMIERE OF "WOMEN IN THE MAKING OF AMERICA" WOMEN IN THE MAKING OF AMERICA, a new series of half-hour dramatic programs, will have Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt as guest speaker on its premiere over Station WJZ and the NBC Blue Network on Friday, May 19th, at 2 P.M., EDST. The broadcasts are being produced by the Federal Theatre Radio Division of the Works Progress Administration in cooperation with the Women's Activities Department of the National Broadcasting Company. At the recent dinner of the American Youth Congress, Mrs. Roosevelt pointed out, "Tomorrow belongs, as it has always, to the pioneer". In her book, "It's Up To The Women", she states, "It is important that women think beyond the mere moment through which we are passing and acquaint themselves with all phases of life and conditions in our country". She also stresses the need for continued pioneering and the untried opportunities for women in America today. WOMEN IN THE MAKING OF AMERICA is the story of the part women have played in the building of the nation - securing the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for themselves and others. (more)-2- It is the story of three hundred years of pioneering - from Anne Hutchinson, who was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony because she dared to hold a meeting of women in her home and criticized the stern Puritan ministers for their intolerance - to Amelia Earhart, who gave her life in the battle of human progress. The first program of the series, "Cavalcade of American Women", tells in a highly dramatic and striking manner, the achievements of American women, both famous and unknown, during the past three centuries. Many of America's foremost women and representatives of organization carrying on the work begun by the pioneers will be interviewed at the end of the program by Mrs. Eva vom Baur Hansl, well-known journalist, who originated the series. Jane Ashman has written the scripts and the dramas will be directed by Harry A. MacFayden, NBC director and former Broadway producer. The Madrigal Singers, with Lehmann Engel conducting, will form part of the musical background. The historical material for this series has been made available through the cooperation of the World Center for Women's Archives, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the American Association of University Women, and other national women's organizations. ****** DEPARTMENT OF RADIO INFORMATION 1697 Broadway --- New York City Columbus 5 - 5364 ISSUED ON: 5/12/39
