Blackwell Family Blackwell, Alice Stone GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Marean, Emma E. MRS.MAREAN 5 CRAIGIE CIRCLE CAMBRIDGE,MASS March 4,1933 Dear Alice Blackwell: I have delayed answering your note about Madam Breshkovsky, because I thought I might have money enough to send you a contribution. For the first time in my life I have been unable to pay my monthly bills, before receiving my usual check for the month to come, I cannot give any money away until I have paid the bills for ordinary necessities, and there is no prospect of that for several weeks to come. It was a pleasure to help Madam Breshkovsky in the earlier days, when I earned a little money, and I should be glad to hear more about her now and to help on her work. So many of us are in the same position that I know that you must find such aid difficult to secure at present. I feel much interested to know ifyou have been successful in this. Your friend Emma E. Mareau MBL. 5 Craigie Circle Cambridge - Dearest Alice Blackwell - Nothing at Easter time touches me in just the same way or means more than your card with the Narcissus blooms. It has come to mean Easter to me, the distinctive mark of the day. I remember how Isabel Barrows said once "Alice always remembers'" and told me about her saying once that she wished,[right page - transcribed to keep the intended flow of the text] she could afford to spend twenty-five cents a week for flowers, and how you used to bring her flowers after that. - The Narcissus still is mother's flower to me. I have a bunch of them on my bookcase now. Somehow I like to associate you with her enjoyment of those you had in your garden and with your constant thought each year, I love your for it, - and [first page - handwritten on vertical] I loved you before. Yours ever faithfully [signature] Emma E. Mareau March 31, 1923 E E Mareau 5 Craigie Circle
