Official Publication: THE MESSENGER [*AsB by Com*] Secretary-Treasurer ROY LANCASTER Special Organizer FRANK R. CROSSWAITH Field Representative S. E. GRAIN February 2, 1928. Dear Miss Blackwell: At the suggestion of Miss Carolyn E. Alling, Hotel Brunswick, Boston, I am writing to extend to you an invitation to join a Citizens' Committee, composed of outstanding men and women of both races to aid the Pullman porters in their struggle to organize a Union of, for and by themselves thru which they may secure a living wage, reasonable working conditions and the abolition of the tipping evil as a method of rewarding them for the excellent service they render the travellers of the nation. A similar committee is organized in New York as you will note from the enclosed leaflet and others are being created in all other districts where Pullman porters are located. These committees will help to win standing and prestige before the bar of public opinion for the porters' struggle. We already have a large number of acceptances and will formally organize the Committee in a few days. Therefore, won't you kindly reply at your very earliest convenience? Thank you. Very truly yours, FRC:P Frank R. Crosswaith Special Organizer, B.S.C.P. Miss Alice S. Blackwell c/o Boston Urban League, Inc. Monadnock Street 119 Camden Street, Boston Dorchester, Mass. P. S. All of it has you as a background - your ability & strength & purpose I have left Worcester & am now living in Cohasset, from which I send love to you. Florence Slaver Slocomb Looking Back at Christmas I would that I could tell you what Christmas means to me It's the season of good fellowship and happy memory. And tho' the Fates have planned for us so many different ways There is something about Christmas that brings back other days. A strain of old-time music, a trick of voice or smile Reminds me of the run we had, for just a little while. Tho' years have fled so rapidly and paths lie far apart The thought of old-time days and friends keeps Christmas in the heart. E.L.F.COHASSET MASS MAR 28 5 PM 1945 BOSTON MASS MAR 30 9-PM 1945 GIVE + RED CROSS WAR FUND THIS SIDE OF CARD FOR ADDRESS Miss Alice Stone Blackwell 1010 Mass Ave. Cambridge Mass. Thanks for your Easter card. Have you read "Anna and the King of Siam"? If not - be sure to. Anna is English & is teaching that to the 67 children of the King. One of his wives of the Harem is the lovely Princess Son Klin - She becomes such an admirer of Harriet Beecher Stowe, that she adds that name to her own & ends her darling little letters with "Yours - Son Klin Harriet Beecher Stowe!" Sometimes she leaves off the Son Klin. Finally - she is so impressed by H.B.S.'s work to free the slaves, that she frees all of hers - to be worthy of H.R.S. It is a most illuminating, true story book - I remember the days you & I met in Worcester, where I organ- ized & conducted the 1st women's political rally - for the vote. The biggest hall was filled to overflowing & 100.s turned away - my best to you! Florence Slocomb 28 Pond St.- Cohasset - Mass. 3-26-45
