BLACKWELL FAMILY From Jones, Mary E. ELIZABETH BLACKWELLGRAND HOTEL TERMINUS Gare St Lazare PARIS Paris, le June 11, 1892. My Dear Dr. Blackwell, Your very kind letter came to me almost as a benediction in the midst of my hurried wanderings and deserved a better answer than I was able to give it in the midst of so many changes and such rush. And now I have seen them all off (save one) for America and am taking a short rest (which I have sorely needed for some time) before starting again as I hope first for Norway and Sweden and then for Switzerland, yet theseparty trips are planned without much reference to rest or to the Sabbath, but I have been careful in avoiding reading a little & writing on the trip; but from Constantinople back I have been fully aware that the body and the mind and the eyes needed a rest. And now I had thought to do Scandinavia and Switzerland leisurely and as the spirit moved, when I find that the lady who has planned to go with me knows nothing about guiding her own movements, travelling so must again join a party or give the trip up. For it would amount to worse than carrying an invalid and I am not willing to take the responsibility and worry in addition to the fatigue of an ordinary journey. It is a pity that more women are not trained to be self reliant and forbearing! And now about your kind suggestion with regard to the talks upon some important questions. I would so dearly love to hear them and will make a point of trying to bring it about when I return to England. As you know, I have sorely felt the need of such instruction and I know of no one so well able to give it as yourself. Your book I enjoyed so much and was glad it emphasized some points which I have always felt to be true. With thanks for your kind letter and generous offer. Yours truly, Mary E. Jones
