BLACKWELL FAMILY ELIZABETH BLACKWELL From Ny, N.W. B56 Dashwood House London E.C. 24th Sept. 86 Dear Madam, Since writing you this morning I have been reading your pamphlet on Christian Socialism, I should be delighted to see a great deal more of this spirit, it is one thing which the world wants - but I despair of ever seeing it! I believe that the teaching of prophecy is that evil will go on increasing in the world at large, that GOD's own people will be more prepared to meet Christ when He comes, & this Second coming I quite believe is imminent & may be expected at any time, the sooner it is, the better! Christian brotherhood is a great want, but the only way to attain it, is first of all to get all men to accept the Paternity of GOD, & to consent to live as His children in accordance with His will, then we should be all brethren thro' our own Father. He would be the great Head of the Family to whom we should all look, through our great Elder Brother, by whom alone we are admitted into the Family, by Adoption - But the world will never accept all this! I believe the small number of GOD's own people will be more & more purified, but I believe the world, the[*!*] bulk of mankind will Spiritually deteriorate - Am I not right in saying that the great object of our lives, in all our actions should be the glory of GOD, rather than the [***] benefit of our fellows. If we act with this one object, viz the glory of GOD, we must attain the other object, because the less is included in the greater - But if we reverse the [*no*] order, we might attain the lower object, but the greater one would not be attained, because we put the lower into the place of the higher motive, in itself a grave error - I am very strongly convinced that in these days, when knowledge is so much increased, that every individual is directly responsible to GOD in a much more complete sense than 100 years ago. Then, it was barely possible for the majority of people to form much of an opinion for themselves. Few could read or could get books if they could read. Now it is different & we are in a special sense bound to stand alone. It seems to me [***] that the days of organizations & churches, are passed away, & man must singly take his stand. Christ must not be merely our great Example, but He must be our Life, living in us & constraining & governing every action, thought & word. It is not sufficient that we try to live like Christ, but we must live Christ, dead indeed into sin but aliveunto Christ! Nothing less than Holiness must be our condition, before we can enjoy the great benefits of religion. I believe there is a great panacea for all evil - Christ - for individuals there is salvation from all evil at any time, on the simple conditions of faith & obedience, but for the mass of humanity nothing is to be done of any moment, (that will [***] affect the whole human race) "until He comes" - Of course I [*Why?*] quite recognize that we are to do what we can, but the single [?eyed] efforts will no doubt be owned of GOD, only comparatively few will be benefitted - Excuse my intruding my thoughts upon you, but I send them in reply to your kindness in sending the pamphlet & wishing that all Christians would uncompromisingly live for the sold purpose of doing GODs will. Believe me, Yours very sincerely N.W. Ny
