BLACKWELL FAMILY From Ringwalt, Jessie ELIZABETH BLACKWELL2159 N. 29th St. Philadelphia Feb. 19th/98 My dear Elizabeth Your kind token of remembrance has settled into my hand in the shape of a golden eagle, and my Mother and I are glad that the old times live in your memory as they do in ours. Fancy us, two little widow women in a little house far to the north of where we used to live, for Philadelphia has spread almost to the old pic-nic places where we long ago wandered under the trees. You willperhaps guess that my Father left no fortune in cash behind him, and my husband died after long ill-health and serious business losses. Of my four children, Roland the eldest has inherited the brain, eloquence and enthusiasm of my Father and I wish you could hear him preach! My second son William, full of zeal and power died one year ago serving a church in Long Island, where he abade with a loving friend Mrs. Shutt, who welcomed him even more warmly because of his name, for as Miss Lazarus she was proud to remember an old acquaintance with you. So strangely do things come about. My youngest daughter is married in Baltimore, and has aged me into a grandmother. My eldest daughter Kate stays with us to be the light of our eyes. She is an artist, taught by Emily Sartain, but our poverty restricts her to teaching which she does well as she does everything! I keep house and try to give my Mother and Kate a cozy nest, and pull the ends pretty hardto make them meet. Roland is keenly gratified to place a window in his church to the memory of his grandfather. Among those that have "remembered" are your old friend Mrs, Thomas L. Kane, Dr. Shields and the old "Associationist" Jacob Byrnnes. Here - I have told of ourselves hoping that you wanted to know of us, and we will be warmly gratified if you would find leisure to tell us of yourself, and I trust that you will recognize our interest in your life and that it is as close and warm as in the long past, and that my Mother and myself are proud and glad to be linked into your life of glorious endeavor, and triumphant achievement Sincerely yours, Jessie E.
