BLACKWELL FAMILY ELIZABETH BLACKWELL From Strickland (Janet)(Strickland) Clobelly, Blacklands, Hastings March 20. 1880. Dear Dr Blackwell, I feel constrained & write you a line & by that for will once again, before it is too late. Consider the possibility of standing for the Board of Guardians. I would & urge this on you.seeing that other more influential townspeople who have begged you to stand - have failed. but that I feel so sure you would have a very great deal of substantial support at the Elections & I think there is no doubt that you could be returned by a large majority of votes. The good which would follow your return is simply incalculable, and I feel sure that such an event would not only be of untold value to the poor inmates of our workhouse, and to the Ratepayers. but it could make the way easier for another lady to come forward at some future time to serve on the Board. The first lady must, of necessity, be specially qualified for the post, and must, of course, do a good deal of pioneer work. Thereis no-one in the Borough who could at all compare with yourself for this difficult - but most useful - Christian work, therefore permit me to beg you to give the matter your serious consideration once more before the 26th that I need hardly say how many gentlemen there are who would most thankfully nominate you! With kind regards Believe me Yours very sincerely, Janet Strickland
