My Dear Dr Blackwell
Last night your book
met me here when I came
in from my classes.  You
have given me very great
pleasure & I am sure
I shall receive very much
more & permanent good
from the perusal of its
pages & their records. And,
I know, for I have already 
dipped into them - beginningmiddle (end), and am
not ashamed to say they
have brought tears to my
heart if not to my eyes.
   Still, one can laugh
too that the very best
 beef could be got in
Paris & that our dear
Dr could say her guides
care was -? effective -
while, at another time

- that champagne was
the wine she liked best
& yet have true pity for
her sisters' pinched faces
in London Streets.
  May the good you started
prosper & spread wider yet.
