BLACKWELL FAMILY ELIZABETH BLACKWELL MISCELLANY HOSPITAL APPEALROYAL FREE HOSPITAL, GRAY'S INN ROAD, LONDON, W.C. Christmas Appeal. THIS Hospital was founded in 1828 on the principle of free and unrestricted admission of the Sick Poor; poverty and suffering being the only passports required. Having no endowment, it is entirely dependent for support on the subscriptions of its Governors and the voluntary donations and bequests of its friends. The Hospital admits into its wards over 2,500 poor sick persons annually, besides administering advice and medicine to about 40,000 out-patients and casualty cases, who resort to it, not only from the crowded courts and alleys in its immediate neighborhoods, but from all parts of London and the suburban districts. The relief thus afforded is effected at a cost of about £16,000 per annum, while the reliable income does not exceed one-third of that sum. In addition to the ordinary expenditure for the maintenance of the Institution, it has been needful during the past few years to expend large sums upon various structural and other improvements, which have been necessary in order to bring the Hospital up to the standard of modern sanitary requirements. The Hospital has no endowment, and the Committee have been obliged to make strenuous efforts to avoid getting into debt. In these circumstances they earnestly solicit increased support from the charitable public, so as to enable them to carry on the beneficent work of the Hospital in an efficient manner. Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully received by the Treasurers; the Bankers (Lloyd's Bank, Limited, Holborn Circus, E.C.), or at the Hospital by the Secretary, Mr. CONRAD W. THIES. Dear Dr. Blackwell I was sorry not to see you at our Annual Meeting which passed off very well yesterday aft'n. There was a good attendance and the speakers kept well to the practical aspects of the work. You were quite right in saying that we have no vivisection practice at the Hospital & no member of our Medical Staff has a license. Accept my thanks for the renewal of your subscription for which I now return you the official receipt. Yours faithfully Conrad W. Thies Esq Dr. E. Blackwell Rock House Hastings Royal Free Hospital Gray's Inn Road. London W.C. Conrad W. Thies Secretary Telephone No. "1673 Holborn" 14th December 1909 Dear Dr. Blackwell, As I am preparing to close my books for the present year, I venture to ask whether you can renew the support which you have given the Hospital in previous years. Your last contribution of One Guinea was given in March 1907. As you will see from the enclosed appeal the needs of the Hospital are very great at the present time, and your help would therefore be doubly welcome. I am, Yours faithfully, Conrad Thies Dr. Eliz., Blackwell, Rock House, Exmouth Place, Hastings, Sussex.
