BLACKWELL FAMILY Henry B. Blackwell Duniway, Abigail ScottHBB to Mrs. Duniway April 23 1906 Dear Mrs. Duniway It seems to me important to secure, if possible, the testimony of eminent public men resident in the four enfranchised either by speech, or letter for publication - States, and you doubtless know far better than I the best men to enlist in the matter. Some of the names I suggest are ardent friends, others perhaps indifferent or hostile. 1. There is ex representative Shafroth of Denver, who resigned his seat when concerned that fraud had been liked for him in his district, but who charged it was not the work of the women and Shafroth is a warm friend of suffrage. 2. Then there are the Senators of Colorado Henry M Teller and Thomas M Patterson, both of them democrats and friends of suffrage. The representatives of Colorado are Franklin E Pomhs (Rep) of Colorado Springs, Robet W Bonynge (Rep) of Denver, and Herschel Mikard Hogg (Rep) of Telluride. The last, Mr. Hogg, is, I know, a warm friend of suffrage. (over)over 3 From Utah there are Senators Reed Smoot (Rep) of Provo City, (But as he is under fire I dont suppose he can do us any service). Senator George Sutherland (Rep) and Representative Joseph Howell (Rep) [of Logan] From Idaho there are Fred T. Dubois (Dem) and Walden B Heyburn (Rep.) both Senators; and Burton Lee French (Republican) Representative (I dont know how they feel) From Wyoming there are Senators Frances E Warren (Rep) (in favor) and Clarence Don Clark (Rep) and Representative Frank W. Mondell (Rep) I dont know how they stand To testify as to Municipal Suffrage there are Senator Chester J. Long (Rep) and Representatives Charles Fred Scott, Charles Curtis, Justin DeWitt Boraersock, Philip P Campbell, James M Miller, Wm A. Calderhead, Wm A. Reeder, and Victor Murdock--all Republicans. I dont know their views on Suffrage. Alice, my daughter has been asked to come to Portland to do what she can to [write for] correspond with the press--She will leave here next Friday. I have advised her to confer with you and avail herself of your knowledge of the State for her guidance. Presidential Woman Suffrage got a majority of the Senate in RI. and of the House in Iowa; but it has been unable to get the other branch to [*carry the measure. Would it be possible to get it through your Legislature? I wish we could get a hearing from the labor unions and saloons of Portland--*] [*Somehow, we must get a majority vote for suffrage in your city--How can it be done?*]over 3 From Utah there are Senators Reed Smoot (Rep) of Provo City, (But as he is under fire I dont suppose he can do us any service).
