BLACKWELL FAMILY KITTY BARRY J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd.48, West Heath Drive, Hampstead, London. N.W. J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., Publishers. 27th Nov. 1913. Everyman's Library Edited by Ernest Rhys. Copy. Dear Sir, Mr Dent handed me the other day Dr Blackwell's Pioneer Work, and I find it most interesting. Would there be a chance if we added the book to our forward list, of our securing the matter for the con- cluding chapter you suggested in time for issue early next year? Mrs Fawcett, to whom I wrote last week, strongly recommends our doing the book, and would write an introduction for it. She was dubious about copy- right, but I gather you [one] can make that perfectly clear and safe - Miss Barry having full powers. Perhaps you will kindly let me know if you are able to arrange the final pages and other details? We must not make more demands upon you than your interest in the matter warrants. Believe me, Yours very truly, (signed) Ernest Rhys. J. M. DENT & SONS, LTD. Dear Madam, We have at last made up our minds that Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell's book shall be published in "Everyman's Library." It is too good a book altogether to be put aside. We have communicated with Mrs. Fawcett, and we hope that she will write the introduction for us. We understand that you are going to give us the right to publish this book entirely in "Everyman's Library," and if there is anything that you would like to add to it we shall be only too glad to carry out your desires if they are within the possibility of our doing. If too there are a lot of letters, and if they would make a memoir of this great lady, we should be glad to consider and look into them, and save you all the anxiety. Of course we would not do anything without your consent; but we think that a beautiful book could be made out of the material, only it would have to be carefully examined. Miss Katharine Barry, contd. - 1 December 1913 - 2. - If you are willing to send us this material we will get a sympathetic lady doctor to go over it and see what can be done; but enough for the present is to say that we will do the book, and would like to know if there is anything in it that you would like altered, and if you agree that Mrs. Fawcett would be the right person to write a word of appreciation and biographical interest. Yours faithfully, J. M, Dent & Sons, Ltd., per [M Dent?] HD/AG 16th. March, 1914. Miss K. Barry C/o George R. Cochrane, Esq., 4, Marsdale Crescent, Edinburgh. Dear Madam, We believe you have heard we intend to issue in Everyman's Library the late Dr. Blackwell's Book "Pioneer Work". This book was introduced to us by Mr. Cochrane, and we had not realised that there was any copyright [for] [*in*] the work, or we should, of course, have applied to the holder of the copyright. We now understand, however, that the rights belong to you, and we should be very grateful if you could pass the rights of the book to us. We are of course risking the possibility of the book's interest for present day people, and as we are publishing it at 1/-, it would not be possible for us to purchase the rights, but, of course, we should be pleased to send you say 1 dozen copies of the book when it is ready, and we hope that its renewed publication may give pleasure to the present representatives of Dr. Blackwell as well as yourself. It would be a great courtesy on your part if we might hear from you early, as we do not want to delay the publication of the volume. Yours faithfully, J. M. DENT & SONS, LTD. Cochrane, of Edinburgh, concerning the new edition of Pioneer Work, and we had hoped to receive a reply from you by this time. We should be extremely grateful if you could let us hear from you in the course of the next day or two. Yours faithfully, J.M.Dent and Sons, Ltd. per HRD
