CATT, Carrie Chapman . GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE . Darby, Florence H. Wednesday 28th '44 June Dear Mrs. Catt:- What a delightful surprise I had on returning home yesterday from a visit to upper New York! The wonderful biography of you which reads like a romance. There seems to have been no end to the things you have accomplished for the women of the world as well as for America. Then to find - my daughter did so, first, - that I had a small part in helping you was a thrill indeed. I do appreciate it all so very much and it makes me feel very humble indeed. I can't thank you, for I do not know words that can express my feelings but I am grateful for my place in your life & work and it is a very fragrant and blessed memory. Miss Peck certainly must have put days & months into this writing of it for it is so beautifully done. Washington is not the same place these days and I rather dread it when I am obliged to go to town. The Washington Hotel people have been lovely to me and I always have a place to rest when I do go in. But it is so filled with army men & crowded, that it is not much comfort. Mr Rush often speaks of you and we often talk over "old times." The Hotel is owned by a southern company now and very few of the old faces are there. This dreadful war has taken many of them. There is just one thing I would very much like and that is for you to autograph this book for me. If you would find it in your heart to do so on a slip of paper which I could paste on the front page, I would be eternally grateful. My daughter wants it and my grandson, who was here the past winter, thinks it would be wonderful for him to have some day! I think that is quite unusual for a seventeen year old boy. So if you would send it to me someday, I would be very happy indeed. Please remember me to Miss Wilson & Miss Peck and be sure to let me know if they or you come to Washington. With affectionate greetings Gratefully yours, Florence H. Darby Transcribed and reviewed by volunteers participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
