CATT, Carrie Chapman GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Hillyer, Mary W. 120 Paine Avenue New Rochelle New York April 19, 1940 Miss Mary W. Hillyer, 70 East 45th Street, New York, N. Y. Dear Miss Hillyer: Miss Schain is the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Woman's Centennial Congress and, of course, she has absolute control over all the work that is done on behalf of the Committee. There have been some complaints from different quarters, as well as from Miss Schain herself, which indicate that you have not quite understood this arrangement. This morning, at the Executive Committee meeting, the matter was thoroughly discussed and it was decided that, for the best interests of the coming Congress and the people who compose its various lines of work, it would be better for you to present your resignation. The Congress has its difficulties at this particular time and it can only go through satisfactorily when there is perfect unity and harmony. I was asked by the Committee to write this letter to you and I add that if you care for an interview I shall readily grant it. Sincerely, Carrie Chapman Catt CCC: HW.
