Catt, Carrie Chapman. General Correspondence. National Council of Jewish Women. November 6, 1930. Mrs. Joseph E. Friend, President, National Council of Jewish Women, 1807 Palmer Avenue, New Orleans, La. My dear Mrs. Friend: Perhaps you know that I have received an "Achievement Award" from the Pictorial Review which they annually bestow upon a woman selected by a board of nineteen persons. I believe believe that their choice is decided by commendations received from individuals and organizations, but I had no inkling of such a campaign being in progress. I was summoned by the manager of the Pictorial Review to his office and I was the most astounded woman you ever saw. It was the moment of greatest surprise in my life. I have received the $5,000. which was given, so the manager said, because of my work for woman suffrage and peace. I conclude that if there was any achievement for woman suffrage suffrage, it was a collective one, and if there is any achievement in peace, it is yet to come and must be the achievement of those now at work. I have selected from the lists of suffragists ten who are old, frail, and who worked not less than thirty years without remuneration. To each of these women I have given $100. I expect to the give the second thousand to old suffragists and the rest will go to peace. I am hereby presenting to the organizations composing the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War $1,000.00- $100 to each organization except the last two to join us and to them I must divide $100 in order to make my $1,000. come out even. This contribution is to go to the Department of Peace or International Relations, or whatever it may be called, and used exclusively for work in that department. Very cordially, CCC:HW. National Council of Jewish Women (incorported) Department of Peace Dec. 12, 1930 Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt 1511 Grand Central Terminal Bldg. New York City, New York Dear Mrs. Catt: I was indeed happy to learn of your having received the all too well-deserved Pictorial Review prize. I congratulate you upon receiving it and upon the beautiful disposal that you are making of the money. I have just learned that one hundred dollars was added to my budget, due to your gracious generosity. I know that you have received Mrs. Friend's thanks in behalf of the organization. Let me add to this my personal thanks, for your act had in it so much of the personal element; it was characteristic of you to do just what you did in the beautiful way in which you did it. I am looking forward with a great deal of eagerness to the coming Conference, largely because it will mean to me the inspiration of personal contact with you, that inspiration which has been felt not only through the country but throughout the world and which is leaving its indelible mark on the whole Peace movement. Again my sincere expression of gratitude. I too shall try to prove worthy in the disposal of these funds entrusted to me to be disbursed in the cause of Peace. Very sincerely yours, Mrs. Oscar S.
