Written in pencil, with 'New York' in the left-hand corner in
red ink, notes for a diary entry, described in detail in Whitman's
commonplace book for 22 October-2 November 1881, about 98

A rocky elevation of a dozen or twenty acres, bare and gray
and broken, affords me one of my daily saunters here.  (Mott avenue,
along near 153d to perhaps 160th street)
[The curbing and grading improvements swaying all around, seem
to have left it for the present like and island]
The curbing and grading improvements that have [levelled]
level'd and roll'd [over] all around, have left [this] it (for the
present at any rate) like an islet in a [li] lake.  Quite a climb,
a few old cedars, plenty
