[*695*] Trial lines: "And there of a forenoon by the curb, a knife grinder carefully holding a knife, bending over his wheel, turning it with his foot." In published form these lines read: "By the curb toward the edge of the flagging a knife-grinder works at his wheel sharpening a great knife. Bending over he carefully holds it to the stone, by foot and stone" etc,. The other fragment written in ink and corrected in pencil: "See the profuse sparks like gold! See the gits and showers flying off from the wheel," and the end of the finished poem: "Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold, Sparkles from the Wheel." As a contractor Walt Whitman wrote the agreement between "M.S. Scofield," carpenter and "Walt Whitman, Jr." for "framing, and setting partitions, enclosing with weather boards, furnish windows and outside door frames . . . for the sum of six hundred and thirty five dollars--. . . to pay in certain instalments . . . and the balance when the job is complete." Followed by four receipts for part-payment signed by M. S. Scofield June 26, July 3rd, July 17th and Sept. 6th, 1852.
