Written in ink on yellow paper. 91 words: Elias Hicks Notes and Fragments--By Walt Whitman The certain evolution of (not ecclesisasticism but) Religion through all stages and happenings is (in my opinion) the inevitable development of humanity and literature. The sumonum[?] of it would be, that a man cannot go beyond his own soul, and there is nothing higher than the soul; that it finally settles all things by its own standard--settles questions of authority, calibers of Deity, and all that relates to Deity, just the same--whatever the ostensible standards, settles them by its own standard. Accompanying this MS, which was reproduced in facsimile opposite p. 156 in Carleton Noyes's An Approach to Walt Whitman (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1910), are three letters, one from Noyes to Traubel, about the latter's review in The Con- [over] 453 servator, another to Traubel from Francis Howard Williams on the same review, and the third from Noyes to Henry E. Lowes on the Library of Congress on 'Abbie Nott' and the fiction of Whitman's 'children'.
