Written in ink, with some of the corrections in pencil on a sheet made by pasting together three pieces all cut from larger sheets of lined paper, 326 words (on both sides of the paper): I say The [time] hour has come for the Democracy of America is [not to finally be radiation and to merely justify itself on] [political grounds not on political grounds but is to] inaugurate [and become] itself (or at least lay out for it) [be a luxuriant] [radiation] in the two directions [just] specified, [new] Poems and Personalities and [outcropping of new Metaphysics, especially the latter.] express[ions}ers of itself alone, [far] ahead of any [th] in the past, [laws of sociology] forms and growths of of [literature of] art, even of metaphysics, & in all the transactions between employers & employed persons, & in business [in] and wages, and sternly in the Army and Navy. Its real fruition [of] in the United States [must] is to [over] 356 be a social, [&] religious, artistic, [& literary] & [poetic. esthetic] [fruition] [?] [our] & [must] is to be, [finally, & solely] accomplished by [a new vas native and vaster their] Literature--[a] the great power, [now swaying] more power than statutes or elections, [and] far .....The facts of original working men, "mediocrities" mechanics, Lincoln, Johnson [Gran] Grant, Garfield [elevat] brought forward from the masses, from the rank and file, & placed in the Presidency,-- [that fact alone], and swaying its mighty powers[,] with firm hand, really with more [power] than any monarch known in history and better capacity no using that power, have far [deeper] subtler bearings than their [pol merely] ostensible political or party ones.
