Extensively corrected manuscript, comprising three small sheets joined with glue. "An inquiry into the political, social & literary United States of to-day—not merely the surface & show United States—but the inmost tissues, blood, vitality, morality, heart & brain—and what's the reality? Beneath the fine show of all these surface suggestions . . . the only real basis of Democracy . . ."
An attractive, extremely interesting manuscript showing Whitman's method of composition.

briefly say here. 
[United States of to-day] Among

An inquiry into the political literary United
States of to-day -- not merely into the

United States -- [her] but the inmost tissues,
blood, vitality, morality, 
hear & brain -- and what the reality ? good & bad --
--what the
philosophy [of the]  (as the modern
term is) Beneath the fine show on the surface
of all these 
suggestions were given of new orders   chasms?
-- a new priesthood and knighthood of authors and artists.  A Religion
& conscience are boldly advanced as the only best basis 
of Democracy. The [true] [purport?] of [Democratic] America is not
as was supposed.
