1891 9 March ?  The Grim Tenacity: prose. A. MS. (1p. .25x19 cm.) 
Written in ink on a sheet of ruled paper (from a government office?)
with Traubel's notation in upper corner (see notes March 9 1891);
first few lines, written earlier (in heavier ink) have been cancelled
by a diagonal line in blue pencil; bottom few lines have
been cut from sheet and pasted above line reading '--the grim
tenacity', 110 words:                
[celebration of [sic] such charac--[not -what-has-been] ter, & of
such physiognomy & physiology?  We know well that]
--the grim tenacity
[these]--[many-a] those long stretches of murky gloom, [through-which]
[-even-the] whose very flashes of hope were lurid, the grim tenacity
[even-the]whose very flashes of hope were lurid, the grim tenacity
of the Armies of the Union, [the] & the National will behind it,
[soldiers-of] not once wavered, not even a day, an hour,--what can
could be grander?
--Alas! there was many a brave sweet life--not North alone,
but south--specimens, hundreds,--[the dauntless] thousands of them
