Mark the Figure: prose. A.MS. (1p. 12 1/2 x 16 cm.)

Written in ink and pencil on a pale yellowish piece of paper made by pasting
two pieces together cut from larger sheets, 138 words:
          Mark the figure, the movements easy from superb
     [A-body-erect], breast expanded, out=door games--the stayed, whenever and
a free walk, as of one who knows not what it is to be [stopped], [where]
[he-goes,] [by-any-will-but-his-own] wherever he chooses to go.-- (an
erect and confident carriage, not from the flatteries of self=esteem
--a fair degree of flesh, not from dropsical or morbid accumulation
--a [clear,] smooth dark, rich skin--a flashing eye, not kindled by 
scorn--a calm gaze, eye to eye, not sustained by impudence--a full,
sonorous voice, not the product of attention, --[noble]
Mark [A] the wild sense of freedom,--[animal] [and-man]--[a] the never quelled
audacity---[a] the dauntless look out of the eyes, looking in the faces
of Presidents, [as if] to say, Who are you?--
