The Quality of Acquisitions: prose. A.MS. (1p. 10 x 20 cm.)
Written in ink, with some of the corrections in pencil, on a piece
of paper clipped from a lined ledger sheet, 113 words:
[The-word-of-the-Modern [?} says-the-voices-of-literary [?} authority,
(and-among-them-the-noblest-voice-of-that-class-in-America)--is-the
word-Culture.} But But is the quality which this word stands
for--the quality of the stores
Acquisitions the stores of mentality [however--valu--full], knowledge, memory &c
whatever their abstract value [be] or beauty in the world are not
always necessarily genuine good,, additions to a 
character?(We-will-not-spare-you{on-the-contrary}they [are] Are not often
out of place, [often-mar} [are] sometimes even monstrous, Certain Deficiencies
& negative [where] possessions, are, [in-most-cases],
[-are-parts par-of} the signs of heroes[The word of the moment says the voice of literary authority,-
(and among them the noblest voice of that class in America) is the 
word culture] but is the quality which this word stands
for But the quality of the stores of mentality, knowledge, memory, &c
&c questions [however valu full] of 
whatever their abstract value [be] or beauty in the world, [are not]
[always] necessarily genuine [good] additions to a

[On the contrary] Are they [are] not often
