A.MS. 1852-1853 (OVERSIZE)[*1462*] 1853 12 March Agreement with Mr Hedges for Framing, Enclosing, Flooring, &c. A.MS. (p. 24 1/2 x 19 1/2 cm.) Written in ink by Whitman on a large sheet folded to make four pages, docketed by Whitman on p. 4, 533 words (agreement), 16 words (docket): [*1*] Framing, Enclosing, flooring &c. of a small House, Two Stories & Basement--size on the ground 16 x 26 feet--front elevation 20 feet, (above basement) rear elevation, (including basement,) 26 feet.--For Walter Whitman, Cumberland st. --------------------------- To be framed complete, according to plan, with good stuff, and in a workmanlike manner 18 inch beams on first and second floors,-- 6 inch beams for roof--studs of joist 4 inches all round. To be enclosed with weatherboards in the same manner as the red houses built by W. Whitman adjoining.-- Cornice in front made complete, with brackets, mouldings &c.-- In rear same as the house adjoining north.-- Roof to be boarded with good hemlock boards, and made all ready [*over*][*1463*] for tinning.--Furnished with box for scuttle, and sash of scuttle all hung and made tight and complete.-- All the window frames and outside door frames (fifteen in all,) to be made c[?]dplace, set according to plans, finished with mouldings, &c. all finished ship shape, [according] All the windows to be hung with weights and pulleys, (unless W. Whitman may prefer certain ones hung on hinges)--The windows are to be finished complete in the hanging arrangements. One front door, (double=door,) similar to the front door in house adjoining north, to be made and hung, complete, Mr. Hedges firnishing and doing every thing to it, except that W. Whitman is [*2*] to furnish / the iron frets and sashes for the upper panels.-- Mr. Hedges to make also one front basement door, and one back basement door,--these are to be batten doors of floor plank, made and hung complete except that W. Whitman is to furnish the sash-- as they are to be sash doors. First and second stories to be floored with good pine floor plank.-- Flight of stairs to be made by Mr. Hedges from first to second story--made so that it can be sealed up.--Made substantial and [*more*][*1464*] Agreement with Mr Hedges: 2 and workmanlike, but no railing or any thing except the flight of steps, properly finished Furring for the masons to fill in, to be furnished.-- All the materials for the above work are to be furnished by Mr. Hedges, and are to be good.--The work to be done in a good and workmanlike manner.--Mr. Hedges furnishes all the nails, hunges, weights & pulleys, &c, &c.--W. Whitman furnishes all the sashes, and the locks for front door, and basement doors.-- The above work is to be pushed on, so that the building will be done, as far as agreed upon above, in order that W.
