Hunt, with MS notations by Walt Whitman (2p. 33 1/2 x 20 cm.) List of subscribers to establish the Banner of Freedom, a newspaper "which shall oppose the extension of slavery and support for election offices persons who will advocate for same." At end in Walt Whitman's writing: "I have paid my subscription to Mr. Whitman who is going on with the paper and should recommend the others above also to pay theirs to Mr. Whitman." Signed S. E. Johnson. Marginal notations in pencil by Walt Whitman listing names and addresses of subscribers. The name Banner of Freedom was never used; it was renamed Brooklyn Freeman and published under Whitman's editorship beginning with Saturday, Sept. 9, 1848. {2} [*2*] We, the subscribers, agree to pay to Francis Pares Esq. Treasurer, the sums affixed to our names, respectively, for the purpose of establishing a daily newspaper, in the City of Brooklyn, to be entitled The Banner of Freedom which shall oppose the extension of slavery and support for elective offices persons who will advocate the same principle: Our said respective subscriptions to be payable whenever the aggregate sum of One Thousand dollars shall be subscribed hereto by responsible persons, provided the same shall be subscribed on or before the 29th of July instant.
