NAWSA GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Ames, Mary C. Private Mary Clement Ames Brooklyn Oct 14 / 72 91 Cumberland St Brooklyn N. Y. Oct 14. 1872 Mr. Blackwell Dear Sir Your letter requesting my name for the Massachusetts Womens Call had just strayed around to me and altho' I am not by birth a Massachusetts woman, and have never yet allowed my name to go to any public call whatever, believing such an act would involve new responsibilities -- while those devolving on me already, are more than I am able to do full justice to -- never the less had I received your letter in season I should have given you my name believing that after my public utterances I could not in justice have withheld it, and not wishing to do so in a cause which I have so honestly and earnestly at heart. I write to say so. Also to tell you for all future time that I am in no wise "a Bohemian" but a steady householder and that save during the sessions of Congress I am never in Washington and that any lines addressed to the [?] ing this letter will reach me from the beginning of the year to the end, without delay. With affectionate remembrance for your wife, Sincerely, Your friend Mary Climmer Ames Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
