I need not repeat details in this. Miss Thomas has been ill and though she is now well, she is much overwhel[e]med with her College work which has accumulated because of her absence from her office. For this reason I think you and I must consider her time more than our own and I have, as you see, left to her the place and hour of the meeting. Please write to her and to me telling just when you will be in Phila and I shall be very glad to entertain you here in our little flat at S[h]warthmore. Unless you arrive after 6.45 P.M. the station cabs are in evidence and the drivers know where we are. If you should come later than that and will let me know the train I will send one of the children to meet you. Miss Shaw greatly regretted her absence at this time as she wanted to talk over the work of the Collage women with you and Miss Thomas. Hoping for an early reply I am Very cordially yours, Rachel Foster Avery NATIONAL AMERICAN WOMAN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION MEMBER OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN HONORARY PRESIDENT, SUSAN B. ANNICE JEFFREY MYERS, 375 EAST 12TH STR, PORTLAND, ORE. CHAIRMAN PRESS COMMITTEE, ELNORA M. BABCOCK, DUNKIRK, N.Y. OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS WARREN, OHIO Swarthmore, Pa., Jan. 25, 1907. My dear Mrs. Park: - At a meeting of the Business Committee of the National American Woman Suffrage Association held at Warren in October, the plan for a Memorial to Miss Anthony was discussed. Of course, we don't forget the fact that there is already a Memorial arranged for Rochester but that it in no sense a national one. The thought on the part of the Business Committee is that a truly national memorial to Miss Anthony is most appropriate in the form of a large fund for the immediate, present needs of the work of woman suffrage. We think this is what Miss Anthony herself would approve of. The Committee, thereofre, aims to raise a fund of a hundred thousand dollars and in order to secure this fund and to be able to appeal outside of the ranks of the avowed and interested suffragists, we think it best not to have the money raised for the treasury of the Association but to be in the hands of a Board of Trustees and this Board shall be self-perpetuating and shall include a number of women known in different parts fo the country for their business and social standing. I was made chairman at Warren of a committee to work out a plan and submit it later to the Conventions at Chicago. The other members of the committee are our National President and Treasurer. The Committee wants to secure as a representative person in New England Mrs. Quiney Shaw, and Miss Shaw directed me (Anna Howard0 to send a letter in your care and aske you to use your influence with Mrs. Shaw to accept a position on the Board of Trustees. Will you please, therefore, read the enclosed letter that you may be fully [Mrs. Park] -2- in touch with the fact as they now stand, and forward it with some personal word of your own to Mrs. Shaw? Please let me know at your early convenience that you have received this and will give the matter your attention. We all regret very much that you cannot be at the Chicago Convention, as we feel it very important that this first convention after Miss Anthony's departure shall be up to the standard of our best national meetings that the world may see that those whom she has trained in the work are capable of such devotion as associated with her has inspired. very cordially yours, (Signed) Rachel Foster Avery Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
