Winthrop Centre, Maine, May 21, 1872 My dear Mrs. Stone; - I regret that an account of other philanthropie work which I had taken up previous to my election as President of the Maine Woman Suffrage Association, I cannot devote as much time + attention to the latter as I would like to. My friends knew this before they elected me but they seemed to think I could do for the cause as much as any one else available + urged it upon me, hence I accepted + will do the best I can under the circumstances Hannah J. Bailey May 23 - 92 [circumstances]. I wish I could consistently be with you at the New England Convention but other engagements prevent, as I wired you. - The Maine W.S. Assn. is gaining in interest and in numbers. We held a [p?] meeting in Portland last winter. Mr.s Fessenden gave a lecture there in the interests of the work the result of which has been satisfactory. The Equal Suffrage Club of Portland is acting according to the instructions of the state Association and is doing good work in educating the people and in arresting the thought of women. The cause is progressing and is sure of victory. Yours for "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" Hanna J. Bailey Pres. Maine W.S. Assn.
