NAWSA GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Benchley, Belle J. Mrs. Belle J. Benchley 5106 West Point Loma Boulevard San Diego 7, California July 22, 1945 My Dear Dr. Lutz: I told my secretary to make tags for mailing the pictures to you and Mrs Catt and then mailed them with out marking each one as I had intended. I am sending you a very cute picture of Kokok who "fell so hard" for you. But I warn you he is a flirt and is never true to any new love very long. He is a precious thing and we love and spoil him. He is the chap on the jacket of my book on Apes. Your visit was so very short and hurried. I think of so many things I wanted to discuss with you especially more about Russia. Miss Cooper is continuing in her efforts to bring worthwhile books to the public. She would not touch anything insincere or second rate knowingly, but she is I warn you a slave driver if you ever submit to her leadership. She browbeat me into my first book and each time I tell her that is all! only to have her tempt me cleverly into another. She stands high in her profession. You would enjoy knowing her and she has entree into all the best editorial offices in New York & Philadelphia. I know you could!! Irene Clark's press story was quite good Mr. Klanber was pleased with it and she promised to send you copies. However, I have saved some papers & will mail them lest Irene has failed. The sick monkey is almost good as new. Emily's surgery is excellent there will be only a small scar. The elephants spent all of yesterday which was a very warm day in their pool - our poor old camel with a broken bone in her foot is all done up in a cast and getting irritable as a human under the same circumstances. My sister was very low for several days after you left but Sunday she began to rally and is doing a great job of getting well. Last Sunday evening she insisted upon writing a short note to mother and telling her about the operation. She is very witty & it was a clever what she called "Blow by Blow" account. It is a great relief to have be improving. I will give all my animal friends our messages. I know you would make a good zoo keeper for seldom have I taken anyone through whom the animals all liked more quickly. I have no idea just when I shall have the prints of Kokok for the photographer has been very busy catching up after a spell of abdominal "flu" I hope you will visit us again and that I will have more leisure to show you around. Thanks again for coming and my kindest regards to Mrs. Catt. Sincerely Belle J. Benchley Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
