C., April 17, 1914 Dear Mrs Blackwell I hope you will want a word from our Federal once in a while. It is a coming idea in suffrage work to ask Leagues for what-it-can give. I will send you our Hearing as soon as published & I hope you will give attention to Burton French’s argument. I have never before been able to get him to go into the merits of the case from the constitutional point of view before but this year he has looked into it carefully and became our enthusiastic supporter. When I found he had covered this ground I [took] dropped all that part of the argument out of my speech at the Hearing. Please have three papers sent me of issue containing this article. You said I should have the Journal sent me but it has not come for six months. I have written a number of letters for it & will always present it when I am in the field speaking. With best wishes. Sincerely yours Clara Bewick Colby Clara Bewick Colby Congress can enable women to vote for U. S. Senators and Representatives. While we must work along all lines until full suffrage is secured for all women, this demand for Federal Suffrage based on the original Constitution of the United States adds dignity to our movement, and lays upon men the responsibility to secure to women their inheritance of liberty according to the foundation principles of our Government.
