NAWSA GENERAL CORESPONDENCE COLLINS, J.A. [????] 1218 ]?]A6 Mr B. [????] Es[?] Amhurst College Amhurst Mass [*Collins*] J.A. Collins To U. B. Stone 1839 [*1839*] Boston April 9/39 Dear Friend: Yours of the 5th is now before me, & am very happy to learn of your interest for the poor slave. As to the premium for subscriptions on the "Cradle", I have simply to say, that the subscription price is put down at the cost of paper & printing. The reason why we make a difference in the price, between single subscribers & those [that] who take 10 or 20 copies is [to] simply this: - If we have a bundle of papers directed to one individual, from 10 to 100 in number, & as we have only his name upon the books it is no more trouble to send all those off than to send one copy by mail. So you will perceive that we should be under the necessity of employing a Book-keeper at an expense of 8 or 10.00 per ann. should every subscriber pay 75 cts. per paper, which is no better to us than 50 cts by the 20 or 100 copies. Yet we are so anxious to have this paper circulated from one end of the state to the other, that we are willing to make personal sacrifices to spread it like the leaves of the forest. Had I time and health, I am confident I could get from 50 to 100 subscribers daily. I will on my own personal responsibility offer you 10 cts for every [copy] subscriber of the "Cradle” procured with the money in advance in all cases. over 10 copies to be directed to one individual. You need not send the names of the subscribers when they are to go in Bundles, but only the name of the individual to whom the papers are to be directed. I am authorized to say that 50 cts will be paid for each Liberator when the money is paid in advance Let us hear from you soon. Respectfully yours for the [d?] J.A.
