NAWSA GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Hazlett, M. A. 1 [*Hist?*] Mrs Hazlett in the Upper Peninsula leader We make the following extracts from a private letter of Mrs Addle M Hazlett of Hillsdale Mich, who has just returned from a lecturing tour in the Upper Peninsula. [Hillsdale, Mich Aug 24th, 1874 Col [Terry?] Dear Sir, Arrived at home last night Rec'd your letter in Chicago. It is too bad you are so deserted by those who should stand behind you with substantial help. You say you are glad you sent me to the Upper Peninsula. So am I, for my meetings have been a Great success. Not once, since I wrote you from Houghton has it been possible] 2 to seat all my hearers though the largest attainable Halls have been used. ¶ At Ishpeming, scores of people probably hundreds could not get in at all & had to go away. Negaunee, Menominee, Escanaba, & Marquette also turned out [????] houses. At Marquette I collected $44 for the State Society, at Ishpeming $25 & some money at other places making in all at least $100. [Have not yet looked the account all up with expenses & cannot today as I have to go next train to Toledo to look after business, suffering from my long absence.] 3 [Will send account in two or three days. I spent $75 before collecting a cent, & you may be sure I was happy when I began to reap the result of some hard work]. ¶ If I have done no more I have set everybody talking on suffrage. At Negaunee men were in knots on the street after my meeting discussing the question excitedly till 2 o'clock next morning. At Escanaba an opponent sent a challenge to the platform for discussion with other parties for next evening. (it was known I had an engagement for Menominee.) next evening A lawyer & a doctor accepted & the next evening I hear the house was crammed full & the discussion was as 4 continue the following evening. If two good speakers could now follow me over the same events & do events freely circulated we should carry the Upper Peninsula. I had the pleasure of knowing I made some votes among Irishumie & Ermans. I send a Mequett paper containing Inspiring & [Nyannie?] Items. Also J. Endon the vacancies & addresses of persons to whom documents may be sent. [I would advise tick] Let letters be written to each of these parties accompanying documents. [Oh I am half dishearted over one want of means.] I shall go to work Sept 1st, [as you brief] & will do my very best. Don't be [much] discouraged. Thousands of men are going quietly to the polls to vote for Woman Suffrage [are] who now do'nt say anything at all Hastily. M. A. Hazlett.
