NAWSA GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE Moore, A. T. A.T. Moore 277 Canal St. New York Nov. 21 1868 Mr. H.B. Blackwell, Dear Sir - It is important and necessary that we as officers have drawn up petition or memorial to Wisconsin Legislature for renewal of our grant &c for our stockholders to sign. --- setting forth the facts that we have entered to get the means to build the road faithfully but unsuccessfully; that we have spent time and money, for example, getting out bonds, stamps for same [some?] $8 m you sent an agent to Europe, but it was little before the severe panic in London, had Mr. Morse identified which prevented Capitalists from aiding or investing etc., etc. I think we can make out a good case As you are more "au fait" in [crossed out: some] such business I wish you would think it over, and draw up a form to use at your early leisure. I believe you concur with me that as directors and officers it will not do for us in common justice or in good faith to our stockholders that we should stand still, do nothing and see this thing abandoned without making reasonable and due effort to obtain a renewal of the grant. The stockholders would certainly censure us as unfaithful, and justly. Whatever others may do, this step on our part ought not to be let undone. Yours Truly in haste A. T.
