Am to be here in New London for some weeks. Thanks very much for forwarding the letter to Lily Hall. Sept 1914/Sept 23 1913 The enclosed check is sent to renew the subsciption of Mrs. Dorothy Henderson Do [?] know if her paper has been sent to Stocklon, N.Y. or to Cleveland, Ohio [*Lilly Dale N.Y*], your list will probably tell. Am hoping to be in Boston sometime this fall and should hope to have the pleasure of meeting you. Best of wishes Yours Cordially, Gertrude Nelson Andrews. July 29, 1913 Mrs. Gertrude Nelson Andrews Lily Dale New York Dear Mrs. Andrews: I am greatly interested in your letter of July 19 which you addressed to Miss Blackwell. I am answering it because Miss Blackwell is not well and is not attending to any of the correspondence just now. I was interested in the report of your meeting as reported in the Chautauguan. Is Mrs. Frank Goodwin the same as Mrs. Grace Duffield Goodwin? I am, of course, especially interested in what you write about the teacher who was offered a position with the anti-suffragists but learned that her salary was to be paid by the liquor interest. Can that statement be substantiated so that we can use it as authentic? It is very desirable to be able to use this with authority if it is true. Perhaps Mrs. Barrows can give some valuable suggestion in getting this information. I note that you say you are arranging for a big Women's Day at Lily Dale on August 13. Can you not make this an opportunity for putting the Journal into the hands of a lot of new renders? We should like to send papers to be sold on that occasion and we should like to have some one getting subscriptions. If nothing else can be done, we should be glad to send a package of sample copies to be given away. We do this when we find it is impossible to sell the papers. I enclose a copy of our cash offer to suffragists by which you will see that any one can make a good commission on either getting subscriptions or selling papers. I hope you will consider this favorably and that we may have an order form you for that occasion in time to send them. She has also communicated with numerous friends who maintain summer places at Newport and who are large taxpayers, urging them to use their influence toward the passage of the presidential suffrage bill in Rhode Island. She is to-day writing the Newport newspapers asking them to open their columns more generously to the details of the campaign, and I suggest that you put them on your mailing list for whatever material you have to send out to the press. Publishers of THE SEARCHLIGHT ON CONGRESS 737 WOODWARD BUILDING WASHINGTON D. C. Aug. 8, 1919. Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, 171 Madison Avenue, New York City. Dear Mrs. Catt: Sometime ago Miss Caroline I. Reilly wrote Mr. Haines requesting data concerning the voting record of Senator Wadsworth, and there was some unavoidable delay in responding to that request. Later, on July 15, Miss Reilly wrote suggesting that we send this information to you. We have not been able to make an exhaustive analysis of Senator Wadsworth's legislative record, but from the records which we have immediately available I can give you the following salient points: [* Wordsworth's senatorial record from office of Searchlight*] Senator Wadsworth entered the Senate in 1915, and during the first session of his service, according to a computation made of the attendance record of senators at that time for the Searchlight, we find that he was present at 67% of the roll-calls, which is a little above the average attendance. I find that Senator Wadsworth is recorded as to having voted on a number of test issues prior to the war as follows: Against the confirmation of Mr. Rublee as a member of the Federal Trade Commission, because of senatorial courtesy in respect to the personal objections of Senator Gallinger of Vermont. Against the 1916 rivers and harbors bill. For the Shields' waterpower "grab" bill. Against the eight-hour railroad strike bill of 1916. Against the Gore resolution warning American passengers off armed merchant ships. For the volunteer army bill of 1916. Against the rural credits or federal farm loan bill. Mrs. C. C. C. #2. On a good many important issues, Mr. Wadsworth is recorded as not voting. During the war Congress, Senator Wadsworth is recorded as having voted for the war resolution; for the draft bill and against higher income taxes. As you of course well understand, Senator Wadsworth has consistently opposed both the prohibition and women suffrage federal amendments. He voted for the Webb export bill, which was designed to enable big corporations to carry on their foreign trade without regard to the anti-trust law. e voted against the wire-control bill during the war. If there are any other particular points in his record which you would like to have looked up, we would be glad to get this information for you. Very sincerely yours, Edwin S. My dear Miss Ryan: My daughter, Mrs. de Forest, is our press agent. She sends out daily news to all the papers, and I understand that her secretary has instructions to send the matter each day to you. Miss Blackwell at one time asked me to send material to Dorchester. Perhaps for this reason it has not been reaching you. The order will not be given that the material go direct to you in Boston. Very cordially yours, Harriot Stanton Blatch HSB/R Friday, Nov 28. The Equal Franchise Association Flushing, - New York 100 Sanford Ave. [*ANSWERED, JAN 8 1914*] My dear Miss Blackwell In your issue of November 22nd, I notice the statement that "Napoleon openly established white slavery" - Will you tell me please, where I can find an account of this? You know how dangerous it is for a speaker fo make statements that she can't back up, then and there, with details, facts and figures! The Equal Franchise Association Flushing, - New York You may be interested to know that this Ass'n has started a speaker's class of sixteen members, with Mrs Laura Moore Elliot in charge. We are studying suffrage arguments and the technique of speaking in public. Last Saturday we took a store in the business part of town, and gave out leaflets, had indoor and street speaking etc. Mr R.C. Beadle, of the Men's League, Dr A. Eugene Austen, Miss The Equal Franchise Association Flushing. - New York Portia Willis, and Mr Herbert Warbasse, Assistant District Att'y of Kings Co, were the speakers. We entirely emptied a comer saloon. Even the proprietor "rubbered" at us. On Dec 15th, we hold a public meeting in the Good Citizenship League Building, with Mr Warbasse and Mrs Charlotte Perkins Gilman as the speakers. Hope it won't trouble you too much to tell me where I can find out about Napoleon! Sincerely Frances G. Ecob.
