NAWSA General Correspondence Santesson, Hans S. SANTESSON Box 15 333 E 11th Street New York City October 13th, 1937 Miss Alice Stone Blackwell, Cambridge, Mass. My dear Miss Blackwell: Many thanks for your letter of October 12th, and the enclosed newspaper clippings. I shall send them to the more important Eastern newspapers (including the Congress, of course), with my next release. The enclosed circulars will show what I'm up to now. Perhaps something might be done in Boston - an improvised dinner - or a "parlor meeting"? I am writing to one of the Indian students who was at Joy Street that night, to make that suggestion. V.J. Patel made a very great impression on me when he was here. As I told you I was with his party a lot. I gave a dinner "in memoriam" last year, - so this will be the second function of its nature. As for the people who object to me - don't let that worry you. They are opposed to pro-Nationalist agitation - in many cases they are here for no other purpose than to block such agitation - so naturally they try in every way to counteract what little influence we have. They are important only because they have more money at their disposal and because they can reach, because of this, people WE can't reach. Thanks for your congratulations about the dinner. Thanks for everything else too! In haste - with best wishes - Sincerely yours, Hans Stefan Santesson Santesson Hans SANTESSON Apt.15 333 East 11th Street New York City Phone: GR 7-7292 November 17th, 1937 Miss Alice Stone Blackwell, 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Mass. Dear Miss Blackwell - We were frightfully sorry to hear of your temporary loss of sight. I went right up to Miss Metzel of the American League, to tell her. She asked me to send you greetings and best wishes from Mr. Baldwin and herself. Thing here remain quiet. I have done nothing since the Patel luncheon on the 23rd - the attendance at which was not as much as desired due to some organizational difficulties I was having at the time. The situation is more or less back to normal now though. S C Kerran, a British Labour Party man was down here just now for tea - plus Remo Bufano, the puppeteer. Kerran has just returned from Shanghai. He visited the Far East on a special mission for the Labour Party - and had the distinction, when not dodging Japanese shells there, of stopping the Shanghai broadcasting for an hour while the police were "editing" his speech... He spoke at a Foreign Policy Association luncheon at the Astor, Saturday, together with Hu Shih and a much booed Editor of the Osaka Mainichi named Takeishi. Kerran was in Spain earlier this year. We're having a little get together for him Friday night at Ruth St Dennis' place. He speaks on the radio, (WABC) 6:35-45 the same night - and sails for Europe on Wednesday. In haste - with best wishes for your recovery - and greetings from my mother who has heard much about you and wishes she'd met you, Sincerely yours, Hans Stefan Santesson Santesson 112 E. 19th St. New York Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
