nawsa general correspondence Well, Kate G. Dear Mrs Blackwell, I think from your card rec ÍŠ today that a letter, I wrote from Campo bello last summer, must have missed you. However it is no matter really. Miss Eastman and Mrs Spaulding could n't take any written part. one could no promise to surely come &c, &c; & Mrs S's health would not allow her to write. So we decided that we would have you and your paper, even if it is not long, and then have a long discussion. Mrs Spaulding, I hope, will speak at length and we have asked 2 or 3 to come to speak, so I think all will be right and I know how glad we shall be to have you any way I enclose the novel four beliefs. Yrs sincerely Kate G Wells Jan 39 Kate G Wells Aug. 15 Dear Mrs Blackwell, You were kind enough to consent to read in Jan. and now a duplicate of your subject has arisen. The Committee planned to have a discussion by two members, pro + con temperance, but when I wrote you, I thought it had all fallen through, me lady having declined, the other not answering. But a day or two ago came the reply consenting. that is the lady who believes in temperance legislation consented. So I now write you frankly just how the matter stands Would you join the issue with her in any way or as I imagine you agree with her, could you choose some other subject [or] I think either way would be excellent. One committee ought not to have the same subject treated twice. We will not consent in any way to give you up, for it is the literal truth, that there was no one whom we wanted so much as yourself. If you have another subject perhaps that would be the easier way. but if not, will you & this other lady divide the topic so as to prevent two different views. Though you both are in favor of temperance legislation I presume. May I hear from you soon & please direct to the Tyn-y-Coed Campobello. via Eastport Maine I shall be here a fortnight longer. Please remember that we will not give you up any way; & if you can take no other subject, & you & she can not join issue, then I shall ask the other lady to choose another subject. Yrs sincerely Kate Gannett Wells. Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
