WALD J. H. WALKER ROBERT WARDROP ROBERT W. WEBB GEORGE P. WEST GEORGE W. WICKERSHAM March 16, 1922 Dear Friend: A short time ago you sent a contribution for the relief of the Russian famine sufferers through out organization. Through your generosity and the generosity of other sympathetic Americans, thousands of these unhappy people have been saved from death by hunger. We understand from official reports to Mr. Hoover that, with the funds now available, the immediate famine condition can be met insofar as present Russian port and railway facilities will permit. But there remains another need--the need of medicines. With the famine has come disease. Great epidemics of typhus and malarial fevers beset the people. Weakened by long months of hunger, they face pestilence with little powers of resistance. There is almost a total lack of medicines and medical supplies. There are no surgical instruments--no bandages--no anaesthetics-- no disinfectants to prevent the further spread of disease. Even the simple remedies that stand on the bathroom shelves of every American home are lacking. It is not for us to thank you for your earlier contribution. After all, you know, these people in Russia are not vastly different from the rest of us. They wear different clothes and speak a different language. But they know what gratitude means. You fed them when they were hungry. Will you help them again now? Sincerely, Allen Wardwell Chairman AW.MR Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
