I told you, Jefferson City Mo, Lincoln University. And you said You might be up this way sometime during the year and might visit the college. While I have been in college, I have become a pledge to the Delta sorority. The Delta's were planning their spring program, and wanted a outstanding speaker so I told them You might speak to them on your way through Jefferson City, since you were a Delta. No doubt you will hear from them soon and so you could understand, I thought I would write you. I told Mrs. Perry about the Delta's wanting you to speak to them, and in answer to my letter she told me what a honor this chapter would have for you to talk to them, and she was very glad that I got to talk to you in Chicago. For the first semester I was president of the pledge club. I hope to hear from you at your spare time, if I don't see you soon, I will see you at our next national meeting. Will you please get off at the East Liberty Station, where one of the girls will meet you and take you to Mrs. Vann's who will be your hostess while in the city. Hoping to see you soon, I am Yours sincerely, Julia Bumry-Jones I was talking to Mrs. Clark and she said she had written you. There has been some changes in our entertainment schedule which we feel will not inconvenience you. [*?*] examples of their own experiences etc. Miss Shepherd then gave us an hour of short stories & really she was fine. They had children present so we could watch the effect and they were really held entralled. That night there was a dance but I was missing. Yesterday I had conferences all day - I was simply deluged with this expression "the influx of negroes here has made this a very serious problem" until I had to get upset and tell them that the reflection was more on Cincinnati than on the colored people to allow such conditions to pile up & that we would all have to work together as I was at much at a loss and they. Mr. Hirsch agreed this was probably so. Miss Hussey and I were talking & I found out she had the position of director Physical Education at University Iowa. Originally she was from Boston. I asked her what part of Boston & she 414 Richmond St. Cincinnati, Ohio My dear Mrs. Terrell: Have thought of you constantly ever since I arrive here and wished you were here also. Arrived on Xmas day and reported at the W.C.C.S. office Thursday morning and met Mr. Hirsch who is a dollar a year man and secretary of the Cincinnati office also Mrs. Treadway who is head of the girls' division. Not long after I arrived here came in some of the girls who were in the training classes in Washington came in and we were all so surprised. They seemed very pleasant and wanted to know "where is Mrs. Terrell?" among them were Mrs. McCloud whom I am sure you would not remember. Mrs. Craig From there we went to the W. & S. Insurance Co where there is a paid welfare worker, a recreation hall - a hot lunch is served every day with varied menu It is the finest condition we have seen & the firm claims these improvements & standards have developed a greater efficiency - (no colored girls) We went back to the office & had lunch - canteen service When I went to sit down Misses Meeker & Hussey insisted that I sit with them & have lunch. Friday we went to the W.S. Playing Card Co & spent the day. Here 1500 girls are employed (all white) a welfare worker is employed by the firm - conditions ideal but no colored. We were entertained at luncheon (me too) and given on leaving 2 beautiful packs of Congress cards. On our return to the office Mr. Hirsch gave a talk on how to get in touch with your city's resources & use it giving practical who was from Texas - dressed as well fussed so much and admired you more than any one there - sat next to me - Miss Price who talked to us going out to Walter Reed Hospital and she is a fine wonderful big spirit - Miss Shepherd who gave the short stories with the dolls stunt night - Miss Hussey who had charge of stunt night - Miss Meeker who has charge of this state also Ind. & Ky. - Miss Cooper Col. Montgomery's niece from Memphis Miss Wilbur of N.Y. They had been in Columbus observing and had come here to continue training by observing the ways and means of carrying out directions. We went that day to a shoe factory at the lunch period & Mrs. Treadway spoke. Here we were to see the ideal factory conditions etc. said "it's a small town outside called West Newton" I could hardly shut my mouth but finally said "I am from Auburndale" which is the next town. It was then her turn to be surprised & she asked, "Who are you" and when I told her she was so surprised & deelighted because she knew papa & mama very well. She immediately began to quietly go around and tell the people about my father mother family hotel etc. I knew she did because different ones asked me about it. They asked a great many questions about you and it surely was a pleasure to be able to tell them just plain truths without exaggerations & see how impressed they were. Mrs Craig wants your address as she admires you very much and because she really is a dandy. Her name is Addie Bowser I think. Do try to see her as I am sure you will be impressed with her & surprised at the amount of work she has done T. you not only were a revelation but an education to her to use her own words. To-morrow I understand we are to go to a factory employing both colored & white girls over in Ky. We have been invited to lunch. My heart misgives me a bit but my husband says to go ahead. If you hear of a race riot over there you will know just how I felt before I went to dine with these people. Give my love to the girls and Judge T. and yourself. Tel. Circle 7-7780 Postal Unit Number 19 October 31 Dear Mrs. Terrell: I am propped up in bed (relaxing as per usual!) writing. So if it goes up or down hill, please forgive me. Today I have had a busy time of it, as I have every day since coming. But this opportunity to work with books, authors, publishers, etc. is certainly a magnificent chance. I have said it so much until it echoes, but every bit of it is true. These are books at children's level-that is, through high school age; and I think grown-ups don't know what they're missing. The Book Committee of this Association is interested in books of all descriptions, but in every instance it particularly concerns itself 2 with seeing that in putting a stamp of approval on a book, there is nothing in it prejudicial to minority groups. I am seeing books which actually have not been released to the book counters yet, and still others in galley which are not due on the market for a couple of months. This advance reading is really grand and I am enjoying it. Today a book on "Joe Louis: American" by Margery Miller is being released to the public. If you get a chance to see it, read it. I think it is a nice portrayal of the man. The Miller girl is white. She was graduated from Wellesley last year. Another book in which I think you would be interested is "Call Me Charley" by Jesse Jackson; he is a young colored man and this is his first book. I am hoping to send for this book in a CHILD STUDY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Family Guidance And Consultation Headquarters 221 W. 57th Street New York, NY Tel. Circle 7-7780 Postal Unit Number 19 3 couple of days and both you and Mrs. Parks can read it and then return it to me. I'd like to know your comments on it. This clipping from the Herald Tribune I thought was quite good, and the prominent space it occupied together with the length were indicative of awareness of this situation which has so recently been the center of attention. Saturday I went to Mrs. Wheaton's and I am fortunate again in securing nice quarters and in a private home. My good luck in Washington seems to have carried over to New York and I am very grateful.
