Harriet Tubman This is a signal honor to the great abolitionist who know no class, color or creed; and to Negro women today, who have inherited courage and determination from this Leader. May the spirit of this great heroine permeate our hearts, and fill us with undaunted courage to carry on where she so nobly left off. May the SS. Harriet Tubman shine as a beacon light of freedom to all women, regardless of race, creed or color. ANOTHER LAUNCHING - THE SS. HARRIET TUBMAN $2,000,000 WAR BOND DRIVE When the Liberty Ship, the SS. Harriet Tubman, slides down the ways, June 3, 1944, the hearts of millions of black folk will be full and glad. Harriet Tubman will again “penetrate the enemy lines and lead her race to freedom”! To pay a tangible tribute to this “Goddess of Liberty”, as Harriet Tubman was called during the Civil War, the National Council of Negro Women is launching a $2,000,000 War Bond Drive, the amount needed to pay for the cost of the SS. Harriet Tubman. The drive will begin June 3, with the purchase of a $5,000 war bond by a Life Member of the Council, and will end July 31, 1944.The drive will be heightened by the Fifth War Loan Campaign, and the “WE SERVE AMERICA” Week, sponsored annually by the Council. To America’s millions of black folk, this unusual occasion spells out, the theme of the War Bond Drive, “LAUNCHING FOR FREEDOM”. This is the zero hour for our race, our country and the world. In this $2,000,000 Harriet Tubman War Bond Drive, your purchase of war bonds and stamps will be more important than ever. It will mean personal sacrifice, and person-to-person solicitation.....It will mean that Negro people again have rallied to the cause of freedom. “BUY A HARRIET TUBMAN WAR BOND FOR FREEDOM 1’ IOTA CHAPTER of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presents Mary Church Terrell at its FOUNDERS DAY PROGRAM Sunday, January 19, 1941 Three-thirty o'clock TWELFTH BAPTIST CHURCH Boston PATRONS Mr. and Mrs. Hayes Alexander Miss Eleanor Joy Miss Theresa Alexander Miss Josephine E. Davis Chairman - Founders Day Committee ' - Service of Worship - FOUNDERS DAY - February 28, 1943 Led by: Mrs. Annie Hitchens Hymn: O God Our Hep In Ages Past (People Standing) 1. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years t come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 2. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame. From Everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. 3. Time like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten as a dream, Dies at the opening day. 4. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home. AMEN LITANY OF THANKSGIVING AND REMEMBRANCE - IN HONOR OF THE FOUNDERS: (To be said responsively, the people standing) Almighty and everlasting God, before whom we stand the spirits of the living and the dead, Light of lights, Fountain of wisdom and goodness, who dwells in all brave and generous souls. HEAR THOU OUR PRAYER OF PRAISE For the women who have gone before us, seers of visions and doer of deeds, pioneers of freedom and pathfinder of humanity, leaders of a great cause, builders of a better world. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For their clear vision of the wrong of all distinction because of color, creed or sex, their righteous anger against all oppression of the weak and exploitation of the helpless, the stern struggle against all injustice and hardness of the heart. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For their passionate pity for the joyless, their compassion for all scorned and crushed, their swift responsiveness to every cry of need. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For the inspired audacity of their ambitions, the sturdy wisdom of their endeavors, the abiding values of their achievements. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For their deathless spirits, living still in room and story, statue, painting and song; for their sense of the beauty and meaning of life expressed in glorious form and symbol. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. - 2 - For homes they have made, for their gifts to little children, and to family joy; for their daily lives, obscure and unknown, renowned and reverenced. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For their perseverance amid discouragement and failures, their steadfastness amid misunderstanding and ridicule, their dauntless courage amid loneliness and the contempt of men. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. For all the blessings that we know today, for freedom and knowledge, for opportunity and responsibility, for all our experience of abundant life, for which they paid the price. WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD. That we may be humble in the consciousness of how much we have received, how little we have given; that we may be contrite in the memory of our failures and the knowledge of our temptations to cowardice and ease, that we may ever seek the things that are before, with courage and devotion. WE EARNESTLY PRAY THEE. That we may learn the secret of self-renunciation for the sake of others; that no mean ambitions, subtle selfishness, or unworthy divisions may mar our efforts; that we may lack neither the insight to understand the needs of our generation and the willingness to face them, nor the courage to pay the price of meeting them. WE EARNESTLY PRAY THEE. That we may build and dare with a diligence that shall not slack when our enthusiasms wane, with courage to face past defeat and discouragement and to encounter unexpected difficulties, with appreciation of the contribution of all who share with us in the accomplishment of the common task, with eyes that look ahead to the future and a faith that trusts where we cannot see. WE EARNESTLY PRAY THEE. That we may think bravely, love widely, witness humbly, build greatly, WE EARNESTLY PRAY THEE. PRAYER: (In unison) Direct us, we pray Thee, in our voyaging over new uncharted seas that we may not lose courage, that may have endurance. Make us continuously discerning, so that we may know our times and penetrate to the heart of their needs. Help us to hold fast which is good, and laying aside the weight of unnecessary custom, hand on to our children a world nearer thy plan, closer to the Kingdom of God. And now being of one accord in one place, may we be given new unity, new power and new life, as we pray together: - 3 - HYMN: Faith Of Our Fathers Faith of our Fathers! Living still, In spite of dungeon, fire and sword. O how our hearts beat high with joy, When-e’er we hear that glorious word Faith of our Fathers! holy faith We will be true to Thee till death. Faith of our Fathers, God’s great power Shall soon all nations win for thee; And through the truth that comes from God Mankind shall then be truly free. Faith or our Fathers; holy faith We will be true to Thee till death. Faith of our Fathers, we will love Both friend and foe in all our strife, And preach thee too, as love knows how, By kindly words and virtuous life. Faith of our Fathers; holy faith We will be true to Thee till death. Her vision found a place in others breasts. They caught Her sainted look as She passed by And gazed upon humanity in pain. She ventured forth where others failed to try. Forged in the fires of unrelenting toil, That torch bequeathed by Her in HISS Great Name, Others have sought to lift it high above, To carry on-in strength, in storm and flame. Her light makes bright the way for erring feet Which stumble over hills-in valleys deep. The Spirit of a noble Founder lives To lift these souls to tops of mountains steep. We shall not fail to keep the ardent faith With which She toiled and struggled in Her time: We carry on, because She points the way, To better days—to victory sublime. -Wm. H. B. JENNIE DEAN, Founder Jennie Dean, 1852-1913 ------------oOo---------------- Obscure in origin, born in legal bondage, of slave parents, at Catharpin, Va., in the year 1852, Jennie Dean possessed a keen mind and a deep religious fervor. The Holy Bible was her first textbook it seems, for she began her first teachings as a missionary, with the story of Jesus. With only the fundamentals of a primary education, she began her community missionary work in establishing Sunday Schools, missions and ultimately churches. Later she attended Wayland Seminary for a brief period, then returning to her chosen field with her dream and set purpose for the establishment of industrial training for the youth she so much loved. Entering domestic service to pay for the home of her parents, she also collected funds for her projects and won many friends to her cause. Expanding her work through cooking and sewing classes in the community, she soon went afield in the interest of building an industrial institution for the training of Negro youth. Winning friends as she went about her persuasive powers soon found her in contact with some of the most outstanding clerics, educators and philanthropists of that era, including Phillip Brooks and Edward Everett Hale. She had learned how to win friends to her cause and how to hold them. She grew in moral statue as she grew in esteem. She never lost a real friend she had once won. With the establishment and dedication of the Manassas Industrial School in 1894, Jennie Dean crowned her life's career, a career of personal sacrifice and unswerving devotion to a selected cause. She mothered the institution to stalwart growth and development, aided it through many crises and in passing, left it as a heritage to the youth of Northern Virginia. In keeping with the progress of education during the years since her passing, the School she founded, now stands as her physical monument to a life of Christ-like service, a spiritual beacon to her memory. This celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the School, seems a most fitting tribute to the influence she contributed to the lives of so many youth and age. She had a vision of a life of unselfish, constructive accomplishment. Her plan of life was well fulfilled. ---Stephen J. Lewis (2) LESLIE PINCKNEY HILL Principal 1907 - 1913 During his administration five buildings were erected upon the site purchased by the Found. The number of buildings were increased from three to eight. "'He was referred to by various epithets ranging from 'A Trojan' 'A little Red Ball of Energy' to 'The Hardest Worker I Ever Saw'." OSWALD G.VILLARD 1903 - 1925 He rendered service as the chairman of the Board of Trustees for 22 years, bringing with him the support of many philantropists. During this period many buildings were erected and the school reached its peak as a private institution. WILLIAM HENRY BARNES Principal 1936 - His administration marks a period of restoration, the school having suffered as a private institution during the years of the depression. The work of the Founder has been made secure receiving support financially from the State of Virginia as the pioneer regional school serving six sparsely settled counties.
