(African descent) on y. 1 Dec 5, 1863 Then discharged to become officer 47th USCT Mrs. James L Welch became officer in 47th CSCT [*15 Iowa Inf*] Camp 47th US Col'd Inft Vicksburg Miss May 30th 1864 I certify on honor, that "James L Welch", born in "Paris" "Illinois", aged 31 years, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, dark eyes and dark hair was mustered into the United States Service in Co "G" 15th Regt Iowa Vol Inft on the 25th day of November 1861, that he served in Said Co and Regt, untill the 5th day of June 1863, at which time having received a discharge from his former Regt he was mustered as "Hospital Steward" in the 8th Regt of La Vol Inft of A.D. and served in that capacity untill the 5th day of December 1863. When he was again discharged after having served the "United States" - as an enlisted man two years and ten days. I certify to these facts from actual knowledge. having served in the same Regt with him Wm C.
